CLEVELAND, Mississippi – 
Trent Giambrone led Delta State University baseball to a split against Lee University on Saturday, falling 17-13 in game one before claiming the nightcap 9-4. The junior second baseman went 6-for-10 from the plate, including three homeruns in game one and seven total RBIs.

HOW IT HAPPENEDGAME ONE- Lee struck first early in the top of the first inning when Ben Holland connected on his sixth home run of the season, giving the Flames the 1-0 edge.
 - In their next at-bat, the Flames extended their lead to 4-0 with three runs on five hits. Another five runs were plated on three hits and a DSU error in the top of the third, for Lee to go up 9-0.
 - Brandon Cummins tripled in the bottom of the third and later came around to score on a wild pitch, scoring DSU's first run and notching the score at 9-1 in favor of Lee.
 - Ben Pickard and Colton Welch each homered in the bottom of the second to make the score 9-3.
 - Five more Lee runs came across to score in the top of the fifth giving the Flames a 14-3 lead.
 - In the bottom of the fifth, Trent Giambrone led off with a solo home run. Later in the inning, Welch homered for the second time in the game, this time with the bases loaded for ta grand slam. The second consecutive two-home run inning cut the deficit from 11 to six, notching the score at 14-8 Lee.
 - Giambrone and Pickard joined Welch with a multi-home run game in the bottom of the sixth, both solo shots, to make the score 14-10.
 - It was Giambrone again who came through with his third home run of the game in three consecutive innings, scoring Cummins and Erick Santiago. The Statesmen clawed back within one, 14-13, in the bottom of the seventh.
 - Lee scored three runs on five hits in its last two at-bats to go back up 17-13 in the top of the ninth.
 - Delta State went three up, three down in the bottom of the ninth to drop game one 17-13.
  
GAME TWO- Delta State took its first lead of the day, 1-0, in its first at-bat when Will Robertson singled through the hole at second base, scoring Brandon Cummins.
 - Jacob Swiney led off the bottom of the second with his first triple of the season and later scored on a wild pitch, extending DSU lead to 2-0.
 - Lee's Ben Holland homered for the third time of the day and eighth of the season in the top of the third to cut the deficit in half, 2-1.
 - The Flames threatened in the top of the fourth scoring two runs on two hits, taking the 3-2 edge.
 - Erick Santiago doubled and Cummins and Giambrone singled in a five-run, five-hit fourth inning to give the Statesmen a 7-3 advantage.
 - In the bottom of the fifth, Matt Barrett's groundout to second scored Swiney and Ethan Gill hit a sacrifice fly to score Luke Stanley in the sixth, notching the score at 9-4.
 - Lee tacked on one more run in the top of the seventh, but Robertson's diving catch in left field ended the threat and the game. DSU bounced back for the 9-4 victory in game two.
 
BEYOND THE BOXSCORES- The Statesmen trailed by as many as 11 runs early on and fought back within one before falling by four. Delta State gave up a season-high 22 hits to the Flames.
 - Three Statesmen, Giambrone, Pickard and Welch, combined for seven homeruns, one shy of tying the school record for homers in a game. Each Statesmen recorded career highs in homeruns: Giambrone (3), Pickard (2), and Welch (2).
 - Giambrone tied his career-high RBIs (5) and hits (4). Welch recorded a career-high five RBIs, including his first career grand slam.
 - A 5-foot-11 senior, Giambrone ended the day going 6-for-10 from the plate with seven RBIs.
 - The Statesmen entered the series against the Flames with 10 homeruns on the season and finished game one with seven.
 - Junior Tre Hobbs (4-0) has pitched two straight complete games, giving up four earned runs on six hits and striking out seven in his win against Lee.
 
 UP NEXT- Delta State will wrap up the series with Lee University on Sunday, Feb. 28 with a single game at 2 p.m.
