Statesmen Take 6-2 Win Over Lions, Sweep Series

CLEVELAND, Miss. – Seth Birdsong gave up one unearned run and scattered seven hits through eight innings to lead No. 19 Delta State University (22-7, 13-5 GSC) to a 6-2 win over the University of North Alabama (16-13, 11-7 GSC) on Sunday at Harvey Stadium-Ferris Field. The win gave the Statesmen the series sweep of the Lions.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Lions claimed a 1-0 lead when T.J. Lockett singled and scored on a Kyle Hubbuch single to left in the top of the first.
  • Delta State answered with a three-run first. Jason Popovich doubled and after advancing to third on a balk, scored on a Juwan Burney ground out. Brian Lane was hit by a pitch and came home on a two-run home run by Zack Shannon.
  • The lead grew to 5-1 in the second. Justin Nussbaum reached on a fielder's choice and scored on a Popovich double. Popovich would score on a Burney single down the left field line on the next play.
  • UNA got a pair of runner on with no outs in the third, but DSU starter Seth Birdsong got a ground out and a double play to end the threat.
  • A Lane RBI single scored Nussbaum to give the Statesmen a 6-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth.
  • North Alabama scored an unearned run and had the bases loaded with one out in the top of the seventh. Birdsong forced two ground outs end the frame.
 ON THE MOUND
  • Birdsong (4-1) gave up two runs, one earned, and scattered seven hits with two strikeouts against one walk to pick up the win.
  • Devan Traglia (4-1) allowed six runs on 15 hits with five strikeouts as the pitcher of record for UNA.
 NOTEABLES
  • The game one win was the Statesmen fifth straight come from behind win.
  • Delta State has won the last seven meetings against UNA.
  • Popovich went 3-for-4 with two doubles and two runs scored.
  • Clay Casey went 2-for-4 with a double followed by Ellis Morgan with a pair of singles apiece.
  • Shannon's two-run home run in the first was his team leading eighth.
