Statesmen Split With Arkansas Tech

CLEVELAND, Miss. --  Brian Lane's pinch-hit single in the bottom of the seventh lifted No. 18 Delta State University (13-5) to a 4-3 win over Arkansas Tech (13-7) in the nightcap of a doubleheader on Wednesday at Harvey Stadium-Ferris Field. Arkansas Tech scored 10 runs on 14 hits to earn a 10-3 game one win.

HOW IT HAPPENED (GM1)
  • Arkansas Tech grabbed a quick 1-0 lead on a Zach Klockowski double that scored Dylan McDearmon in the top of the first.
  • The Statesmen scored two runs in the bottom of the second to take a 2-1 lead. Jason Popovich led off with a single and scored on a Zack Shannon single, and Brian Lane reached on an error and scored on a Clay Casey single to right field.
  • Seven runs crossed the plate in the third as Arkansas Tech built an 8-2 lead. Michael Post drove in two runs with a single while Mark Vaughn had a two-run double. Marcus Wilson, Kyle Gibbs and Cody Wescott also had RBI singles in the inning.
  • The Statesmen cut the deficit to 8-3 in the third. Nick Morgan singled to lead off the frame and scored on a Shannon ground out.
  • Arkansas Tech increased the lead to 10-3 in the sixth. Wescott had an RBI single and Marcus Wilson drew a bases loaded walk.
 
ON THE MOUND (GM 1)
  • Brady Chambley (1-1) suffered the loss, allowing eight runs on eight hits with three strikeouts.
  • Quentin Bowling (1-0) earned the win for the Wonder Boys, yielding one run on a hit with two strikeouts in relief of starter Layton Robinson.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (GM2)
  • Arkansas Tech pushed three runs across in the top of the first to take an early 3-0 lead. Klockowski doubled home a run while two runs scored on a wild pitch and a ground out.
  • The Green-and-White tied the game in the bottom of the first. Burney reached on a fielder's choice and Shannon walked with two outs to set up a three-run home run by Tyler Brown.
  • The game remained tied into the bottom of the seventh. Dakota Glore started the inning with a pinch-hit single and advanced to third on a throwing error on a failed pick-off attempt by the ATU pitcher. Lane singled up the middle past a drawn in infield for the walk-off victory.
 
ON THE MOUND (GM2)
  • Delta State starter John Wesley Ray pitched 4.2 innings with three strikeouts and gave up three runs on three hits in his first career start. Ray retired 9 of the last 10 batters he faced before giving way to Zach Osbon.
  • Osbon (4-0) retired all seven batters he faced in 2.1 innings with a strikeout to earn the win.
  • Issac Hale (1-4) took the loss in relief of starter Chris McKeehan. Hale allowed one run on three hits with three strikeouts.
 
NOTEABLES
  • Shannon went 1-for-3 with two RBIs and Casey was 1-or-3 with an RBI in game one for the Statesmen.
  • Popovich, Morgan, Burney and Nussbaum collected a hit apiece in game one.
  • The walk off win in game two was the second walk off of the season and the second in four games.
  • Jason Popovich went 2-for-2 with a walk as the only Statesmen with multiple hits in game two,
  • Brown's three-run home run was his third on the year, tying him with Shannon for second on the team.
  • DSU scored three runs with two outs in the doubleheader and now has scored 52 of 111 runs with two outs this season.
