QUINCY, Illinois – Top ranked Delta State University (7-1) held off a late rally for a 6-5 win in game one and earned an 11-2 win in the nightcap to sweep No. 9/16 Quincy University (0-2) on Sunday at the Quincy Baseball Stadium.
Hayden Davey struck out eight while giving up two runs on two hits and
Juwan Burney and
Josh Russell combined for six hits to lead the Statesmen in game one.
Dalton Minton and
Tyler Walton combined to throw six scoreless innings with seven strikeouts out of the Statesmen bullpen in game two.
Jason Popovich led DSU with three RBIs while
Zack Shannon and
Brian Lane each had two RBIs in the night cap.

GAME 1 HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Quincy took a 2-0 lead on a two-run home run by Jeff Hightower in the bottom of the fourth.
- The Statesmen scored a run in the fifth and three in the sixth to take a 4-2. Josh Russell doubled and scored on a passed ball to cut the QU lead to 2-1 in the fifth. Juwan Burney singled and advanced to second before scoring an Emil Ellis base knock to tie the game in the sixth. Russell singled home Ellis and Jason Popovich doubled in a run to cap the inning.
- Zack Shannon was hit by a pitch followed by Clay Casey single to start the top of the seventh. Ellis reached on an error that plated Shannon and put the Statesmen up 5-2.
- Hightower hit his second home run of the afternoon to trim the lead to 5-3 in the seventh.
- Brian Lane doubled home Popovich in the eighth to give the Statesmen a 6-3 lead.
- The Hawks rallied for two runs to cut the lead to 6-5 with the tying run on base in the ninth. Peyton White came on and got DSU out of the jam to preserve the win.
GAME 1 ON THE MOUND:
- Hayden Davey (2-1) struck out eight and yielded two runs on two hits with two walks to earn the win.
- Peyton White (3) entered the game two runners in scoring position and despite two runs crossing the plate, retired the side to earn the save.
- Starter Riley Martin (0-1) gave up four runs on 12 hits with two strikeouts and a walk to take the loss for the Hawks.
GAME 2 HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Birdsong belted his third home run on the afternoon to give the Hawks an early 1-0 lead in the first.
- The Statesmen scored four runs in the second and third innings and one run in the fourth to build a 9-2 lead.
- David Herrington came home on a Popovich RBI single and Lane was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded for the first two runs in the second. Shannon singled to right field to score Jamell Newson and Popovich for a 4-0 lead.
- A Chandler Purcell solo home run cut the DSU lead to 4-2 in the bottom of the second.
- In the third, Popovich drew a bases loaded walk followed by a Lane RBI single. Newson had a sac-fly to score Ellis and Popovich stole home on a double steal to push the Statesmen lead out to 8-2.
- Catcher Bradly Sanford's delivered an RBI double in the fourth for a 9-2 DSU lead.
- Two runs crossed the plate to give the Statesmen an 11-2 lead in the sixth. Herrington singled and scored when Popovich reached on a fielder's choice and Sanford scored on a passed ball.
GAME 2 ON THE MOUND:
- Dalton Minton (1-0) allowed one hit with three strikeouts and a walk through four scoreless innings to earn the win.
- Starter Nick Stroud (0-1) gave up four runs on five hits with a walk and a pair of strikeouts as Quincy's pitcher of record.
- Tyler Walton pitched two scoreless to innings with four strikeouts, including punching out the side in the seventh.
NOTEABLES:
- The Green-and-White improved to 4-0 against ranked opponents.
- Russell went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI while Burney went 3-for-5 with a run scored for the Statesmen in game one.
- Popovich, Lane, Casey and Ellis each had two hits in game one.
- Statesmen pitchers fanned 11 Hawks in game one for their fifth game with nine or more strikeouts.
- The 15 hits in game one and 11 hits in game two were the sixth and seventh double digit hit games for the Statesmen this season.
- Popovich went 2-for-4 with three RBIs for his fifth multi-hit game this season and 33rd of his career in game two.
