LIVINGSTON, Ala. Dalton Minton tossed a complete game with a career-high eight strikeouts to lead No. 1/2 Delta State baseball team (19-2, 10-1 GSC) to a 4-1 win over the University of West Alabama (8-14, 4-6 GSC) in the nightcap of a doubleheader on Saturday Tartt Field.
Zack Shannon went 3-for-4 with three RBIs, a home run and a triple to lead the Statesmen to a 7-6 win in game one.
Brian Lane had a two-run home run and Shannon a solo home run in the game two win.

HOW IT HAPPENED (GM 1)
- The Statesmen scored two in the first and three in the second to take an early 5-0 lead. Zack Shannon led off the second with a solo home run. Juwan Burney reached on a fielder's choice and scored on a Nick Morgan single to left. Shannon tripled in Brian Lane and Jason Popovich and scored on a Clay Casey sac-fly in the third.
- West Alabama got on the board on a Dominique Dawson solo home run in the bottom of the third.
- Morgan had a leadoff single and scored on a Justin Nussbaum single to center to give the Statesmen a 6-1 lead in the fourth.
- The Tigers scored two in the two in the sixth and eighth innings to cut the lead to 6-5. Austin Moffett belted a two-run home run with no outs in the seventh and Ben Dalke had a two-RBI single with two outs and the bases loaded in the eighth.
- DSU reliever Jason Lott recorded a strikeout to end the threat in the eighth and Melvin Frazier recorded the final two outs, including striking out Luke Phillips with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom ninth.
ON THE MOUND (GM 1)
- Seth Birdsong (4-0) struck out seven and allowed five runs, three earned, on four hits to get the win.
- JT Salter (2-2) gave up six runs on eight hits with five strikeouts to take the loss.
- Frazier registered the final two outs in the ninth for his first save as a Statesmen.
HOW IT HAPPENED (GM 2)
- The Statesmen got on the board in the top of the first when Brian Lane hit a two-run home run after Popovich led off the inning with a single.
- Shannon hit a solo home run and Casey doubled and scored on a wild pitch to increase the lead to 4-0 in the sixth.
- A Joel Murphy two-out RBI singled scored Dominique Dawson to cut the DSU lead to 4-1 while a pop out with the bases loaded ended the UWA threat.
ON THE MOUND (GM 2)
- Dalton Minton (4-0) went the distance with a career-high eight while allowing one run on seven hits in seven innings of work.
- Layton Dill (0-2) allowed four runs on seven hits with a pair of strikeouts as the pitcher of record for the Tigers.
NOTABLES
- Shannon's two solo home runs on the day tie him with Barry Lyons (1979-82) for fifth on the career home run with 36.
- The Statesmen had 13 hits in game one, marking the 16th time the Statemen have posted double-figure hits this season.
- Birdsong worked a season-high 7.2 innings and tied a season-high with seven strikeouts.
- Shannon, went 5-for-7 with four RBIs, two home runs, a triple and four runs scored in the doubleheader. The Cincinnati, Ohio native finished game one 3-for-4 with three RBIs, three runs scored, a home run and a triple and went 2-for-3 with a home run in game two.
- Morgan went 3-for-5 with a run scored with an RBI and Casey went 2-for-4 with an RBI in game one.
- Lane went 1-for-4 with two RBIs and Jason Popovich was 2-for-3 with a run scored in game two for the Statesmen.
- Minton's complete game was the first by a Statesmen pitcher in 2018.
- The Statesmen improved to 15-1 when leading after six innings and 5-1 in games decided by two runs or less after game one.
