Statesmen Win Nightcap To Split With CBU

MEMPHIS, Tenn. –Will Myers went 3-for-4 with two RBIs to help No.1/1 Delta State University baseball (18-4, 10-3 GSC) to a 9-2 win over Christian Brothers University (7-16, 4-10 GSC) in the nightcap of a doubleheader on Saturday at Nadicksbernd Field.
 
Christian Brothers scored seven unearned runs and took advantage of a season-high five Statesmen errors to take a 7-4 win in game one.

HOW IT HAPPENED | GM 1
  • CBU plated five unearned runs and took advantage of two DSU errors to take a 5-0 lead in the second. Jared Cramer and Garett Reason-Kerkoff had RBI singles and Kyle Hindman had an RBI double.
  • The Bucs added two unearned runs in the fourth to take a 7-0 lead.  A run scored on a Jared Goodspeed ground out and another run scored on a throwing error.
  • Delta State scored two runs in the fifth to cut the deficit to 7-2. Darek Sargent singled in a run and CJ Estave scored on a passed ball.
  • Matt Majeur doubled and scored on a Hayden White sac-fly to trim the CBU lead to 7-3 in the seventh.
  • Bett Young walked and scored when Majeur struck out and reached on a wild pitch in the eighth.
  • Estave got hit by a pitch for would have been bases loaded with one out in the eighth but was called back for leaning into a pitch. A strikeout and a fly out ended the eighth inning threat.
ON THE MOUND HAPPENED | GM 1
  • Hunter Riggins (6-1) gave up seven unearned runs on six hits with two strikeouts in 3.2 innings to suffer his first loss in seven starts.
  • CBU starter Gil Erwin gave up two runs on four hits with a strikeout and six walks.
  • Nick Myers (1-0) work 2.0 scoreless innings with four strikeouts to close the game for the Bucs.
HOW IT HAPPENED | GM 2
  • The Statesmen took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Jake Barlow singled scored on a Mejeur single.
  • Jared Cramer walked and scored on a two-out single from JD Goodspeed to tie the game 1-1 in the bottom of the first.
  • The Statesmen scored a run in the third and two in the fifth to take a 4-1 lead. Darek Sargent doubled and scored on a throwing error in the third.
  • Majeur singled and scored on a Myers single and Landon Roberts singled and later came home on a wild pitch in the fifth.
  • The Statesmen scored five runs in the seventh to take a 9-1 lead. Myers and Brett Young had RBI singles while two runs scored on wild pitches and one on a throwing error.

ON THE MOUND HAPPENED | GM 2
  • Melvin Frazier (4-1) struck out six and walked nine while giving up two runs on three hits to earn the win.
  • Ryan Taylor (2-5) gave up seven runs on eight hits three strikeouts and six walks to take the loss for CBU.
NOTEABLES
  • The CBU game one win snapped the Statesmen's 50 game series winning streak and 26 game winning streak at Nadickbernd Field.
  • Majeur went 2-for-5 with a double to lead the Statesmen in game one.
  • Young and Majeur had two hits and an RBI while Sargent finished with two doubles and an RBI in game two.
