BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – No. 2/6 Delta State University baseball team (19-5, 11-3 GSC) rally from a 3-2 deficit came up short as Miles College (11-11) held on for a 3-2 win on Wednesday at Rickwood Field.
Trailing 3-2,
Jake Barlow doubled with one out before a ground out and a fly out ended the Statesmen's threat in the ninth inning.
Destin Davidson walked and scored on a Ryne Benson's sac-fly to give the Bears the 3-2 advantage in the fourth .

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Miles scored two runs in the bottom of the second for a 2-0 lead. Brandon Connor singled and would score on a wild pitch and Cody Hamilton singled and scored on Ryne Benson's sac-fly.
- The Statesmen tied the game in the third. Josh Russell singled and stole second before scoring on a Weber Herbison single. Herbison moved to third on a Brett Young double and came home on a Darek Sargent ground out.
- Miles scored a run in the bottom of the fourth to go back in front, 3-2. Destin Davidson walked and scored on Benson's second sac-fly of the day.
- Barlow got aboard with a one-out double in the ninth before reliever Will Canty got a ground out and a fly out to end the game.
ON THE MOUND HAPPENED
- Payton Griffin (0-1) allowed one run on one hit with two strikeouts and three walks in one inning pitched to take the loss for the Statesmen.
- Matthew White (1-0) gave up two runs on seven hits with five strikeouts as Miles winning pitcher.
- Canty recorded tine final two outs in the ninth to earn his second save.
NOTEABLES
- Barlow finished the day 2-for-4 with a double while Herbison was 2-for-3 with an RBI at the plate for the Statesmen.
- This was the first meeting on the diamond between Delta State and Miles.
- Rickwood Field is considered America's Oldest Baseball park and was longtime home to the Birmingham Barons. Parts of the movie 42 were filmed at the Park.
- Russell and Estave finished with one hit apiece and Sargent had an RBI.
- Connor and Hamilton led Miles with two hits apiece.
