No. 2 Statesmen Swept By No. 12 West Florida

CLEVELAND, Miss. – No. 12/23 the University of West Florida (21-8, 13-1 GSC) captured 7-5 and 7-3 wins to sweep a doubleheader from the No. 2/6 Delta State University baseball team (19-7, 12-4 GSC) on Saturday at Harvey Stadium-Ferriss Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED | GM 1
  • West Florida scored a pair of runs in the second to take a 2-0 lead. Matthew Jones and Dylan Mehennett reached on errors and would score on a Matt Sullivan two-out double.
  • Jake Barlow cut the UWF lead to 2-1 with a solo home run to left field in the bottom of the second.
  • The Argonauts added three runs to take a 5-1 in the fourth. Menhennett hit a solo home run followed by a Sullivan RBI double while another run came home on an error.
  • Sullivan recorded his fourth RBI singling home Adam Imwalle to give UWF a 6-1 lead.
  • The Statesmen cut the Argos to 6-5 with four runs in the bottom of the seventh. Barlow walked and scored on a throwing error. Weber Herbison hit a three-run home run with Payton Lane and Josh Russell on the bases after singles.
  • West Florida added an insurance run on a Matthew Estrada sac-fly to take a 7-5 lead in the eighth.
ON THE MOUND | GM 1
  • Hunter Riggins (6-2) struck out six and yielded six runs, three earned, on seven hits in 7.0 innings of work as the pitcher of record for the Statesmen.
  • UWF starter Tony Kucera (5-0) struck out three while allowing four runs, three earned, on four hits to pick up the win.
  • Daniel Floyd (4) closed the game to earn the save, allowing one run with a strikeout over 2.0 scoreless innings.
  • Tyler Walton gave up one hit and walked one in 2.0 scoreless innings in relief of Riggins.
HOW IT HAPPENED | GM 2
  • West Florida got an RBI double from Trevor Payne and a two-run double by Imwalle to take a 3-0 lead in the first.
  • The Statesmen cut the deficit to 3-1 in the the second on a Matt Majeur solo home run to left.
  • UWF lead stretched to 5-1 on a Jones two-run double in the third.
  • West Florida would extend the lead to 7-1 in the seventh getting RBI singles from Jones and Mike Farnell.
  • Delta State scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to cut the UWF lead to 7-3. Herrington doubled off the wall in right and Hayden White followed with a two-run home run.
ON THE MOUND | GM 2
  • Melvin Frazier (4-2) gave up five runs on three hits with a strikeout and five walks to take the game two loss for the Statesmen.
  • Andrew Vaccacio (3-0) struck out nine and gave up three runs on eight hits to pick up the win.
NOTEABLES
  • Herbison went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs while Barlow was 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored in game one.
  • Barlow's solo home run in the game was his team-leading sixth of the season.
  • Majeur finished the doubleheader 3-for-5 with his second home run the season in game two.
  • White's two-run home run in the seventh inning of game two was his first home run as a Statesmen.
  • The Statesmen last home series loss came against Shorter University on March 24-25, 2018.
