Hougesen’s Shutout Helps Statesmen Split With Lee

CLEVELAND, Tenn. –Seth Hougesen tossed a complete game shutout to lead No. 16/19 Delta State University baseball (25-10, 14-8 GSC) to a 4-0 win over Lee University (17-20, 8-10 GSC) in the nightcap of a doubleheader on Saturday at Olympic Field.
 
Hougesen struck out seven while scattering seven hits over 7.0 innings for his first complete game of the season.
 
Payton Lane went 1-for-3 with a solo home run and Will Myers had an RBI double. David Herrington had an RBI single and Weber Herbison had an RBI triple.
 
Miguel Pimentel drove in four runs and Thomas Zazzaro had two RBIs to help Lee to a 13-3 win in game one.

HOW IT HAPPENED | GM 1
  • Lee grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first. Zazzaro singled and after stealing second, scored on an Alan Smith single.
  • Patrick Hodges doubled and came home on a Hayden White ground out to tie the game in the second.
  • The Flames went up 2-1 in the bottom of the second when a run scored on an error.
  • Delta State took a 3-2 lead in the fourth on a Darek Sargent two-run home run.
  • Lee scored six in the sixth and five in the seventh to win the game by the NCAA run-rule Zazzaro had a two-run single and a Ryan Beamish had an RBI single to highlight the sixth. Miguel Pimentel hit a grand slam during the five-run seventh to end the game.
ON THE MOUND | GM 1
  • Hunter Riggins (7-3) gave up eight runs, five earned, on 12 hits with five strikeouts to suffer the game one loss.
  • Randall Coxwell (2-2) pitched 1.2 scoreless innings with one strikeout to ger the win for Lee.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED | GM 2
  • The Statesmen took a 1-0 lead in the second. Herbison singled with two outs and after moving to third on an error, scored on a Herrington single.
  • The Statesmen worked out of a two on and one out jame in the second inning. Silver and Keyshaun Smith delivered two-out hits but were stranded at second and third after a strikeout and a flyout ended the frame.
  • Lane belted a solo home run with two outs to give the Statesmen a 2-0 lead in the top of the third.
  • The Flames loaded the bases with two outs in the third but Hougesen struck out Silver to get out of the inning.
  • Two more runs crossed in the fourth to build a 4-0 lead. Matt Majeur singled and scored on a Weber Herbison triple and Herbison scored on a Myers double down the left field line.
ON THE MOUND | GM 2
  • Hougesen (5-0) struck out seven and scattered seven hits over 7.0 shutout innings to pick up the win.
  • Alex Butler (2-3) took the loss for Lee, giving up four runs, three earned on five hits with two strikeouts and three walks.
NOTEABLES
  • Hodges went 2-for-3 with a double, one RBI and a run scored and Sargent finished 1-for-3 with two RBIs in game one.
  • Lane went 1-for-3 with a solo home run, the first of his Statesmen career.
  • Myers had an RBI double, David Herrington had an RBI single and Weber Herbison had an RBI triple in game two.
