Statesmen Fall on the Road to Valdosta State

VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Delta State University men's basketball team fell to Valdosta State University 103-80 on Saturday afternoon. It was the second loss in a row as the Statesmen gave the most points they had in a single game this season. The Blazers also scored the most points they had in a GSC game this year. DSU was paced by 19 points from Anderson McCoy while Maalik Cartwright had a career high 15 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Delta State scored first with two free throws from Keyshaun Street.
  • After that both teams went back and forth with nine lead changes in the next ten minutes.
  • The Blazers led by as many as seven while DSU led by as many as 5 in that period.
  • Late in the first half Cam Hamilton and DeMarcus Addie came off the bench for VSU and provided a spark to give them a lead which they would relinquish in the last three minutes of the first half.
  • Austin Laatsch missed a layup and Imoras Agee scored a layup at the buzzer to give Valdosta a 48-36 lead at halftime.
  • VSU went on a 10-0 run to push the lead out to 58-39 to start the second half.
  • After that DSU could not cut the deficit under 14 points.
  • Blazers led by as many as 32 points in the second half.
  • Z'Mari Minter scored his first bucket of the season to give the Statesmen 80 points in the game.

TURNING POINT
  • UWF went on a 18-0 run to take the lead out to 20 points over the last three minutes of the first half and the first three minutes of the second half.
 
STAT OF THE GAME
  • Valdosta was 12-25 in three point shots while DSU was 6-31.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Anderson McCoy had a team high 19 points
  • Keyshaun Street and Airen Brooks had 14 points apiece.
  • Brooks also added 11 rebounds for his seventh double-double of the year.
  • Cartwright had a career high 15 points.
  • Everyone who played for the Statesmen scored
