CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Delta State men's basketball team faced off with Shorter University on Thursday night to open the New Year. The Statesmen won 73-62 behind a pair of double doubles from
Airen Brooks and
Maalik Cartwright. The Statesmen improve to a .500 after the victory over Shorter. The Statesmen are now 6-6 overall and are 2-2 in Gulf South Conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Delta State took an early 9-1 lead with 16:00 left in the first half. Airen Brooks, Cameron Burkett, and Austin Laatsch each had three points in the first four minutes.
- At the 11:22 media timeout the Statesmen's lead had been cut to two, 13-11.
- After a pair of free throws by Ja'cori Wilson Shorter tied the ball game 17-17 with 8:58 left in the half. A three pointer by Jay Shropshire gave the Hawks a 20-17 lead 8:21 left.
- A three pointer from Brooks tied the game 20-20 going into the 7:55 media timeout.
- Another three from Brooks after the media timeout gave the Statesmen a 23-20 lead with 7:32 left in the half.
- After a dunk and a free throw from Wilson, Shorter tied the game 26-26 with 3:13 left in the half.
- The Statesmen lead 31-30 heading into half time. Delta State was led by Brooks in the first half with 11 points, while Shorter was led by Wilson who put up ten in the half.
- Delta State extended their lead to four, 36-32 at the 15:40 media timeout. All five points scored by the Statesmen came from Laatsch.
- Back to back lay ups from Shorter's Bryan Polanco gave the Hawks a 38-36 lead with 13:59 left in the game.
- Thanks to a layup and free throw from Brooks gave DSU the lead 39-38 with 13:28 left in the half.
- A three pointer from Wilson gave Shorter back the lead. The Hawks led the Statesmen 41-39 with 13:20 left in the game.
- The Statesmen trailed 45-43 at the 11:13 media timeout.
- Brooks' layup for DSU with 10:31 left tied the game at 45-45.
- Delta State took back the lead with 9:41 after Keyshaun Street's layup, the Statesmen led 47-45 with 9:41 left in the half.
- Delta States' 9-3 run late in the second half gave them a 58-51 lead at the 6:01 media timeout.
- The Statesmen took a double-digit lead, 61-51 after Brooks' three pointer 5:02 left.
TURNING POINT
- A 61.5 shouting percentage in the second half allowed the Statesmen to pull away from the hawks in the final minutes.

- Maalik Cartwright recorded his first career double-double while recording career highs in points and rebounds
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- Airen Brooks recorded his fifth double-double scoring 24 points and grabbing 13 boards.
