Nienaber Earns 600th With Overtime Win Over West Georgia

CLEVELAND, Miss. – In an overtime thriller, Delta State University men's basketball defeated the University of West Georgia 84-74 in overtime to give Coach Mike Nienaber his 600th career victory. The Statesmen took home the win behind a double-double from Airen Brooks. Anderson McCoy hit four big free throws in the extra period to seal the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Statesmen went 5-6 from the arch to take an early 15-3 lead with 15:39 left in the first half.
  • A jumper from UWG's Oronte Anderson cut Delta State's lead 15-7 with 14:29 left.
  • Cam Burkett gave DSU their double digit led back with his third three-point field goal. Delta State led West Georgia 18-17 with 13:59 remaining in the half.
  • The Statesmen took a 20-9 lead into the 11:32 media timeout.
  • Delta State had a 15-point lead entering the 7:33 media timeout. Burkett led the Statesmen with 9 points.
  • An 8-0 run by UWG cut the statesmen lead to 27-17 with 3:45 left in the half.
  • A three-point field goal from Keyshuan Street put the Statesmen up 30-17 before the 3:27 media timeout.
  • Delta State led 35-22 going into halftime. The Statesmen were led by Burkett who finished the first half with 11 points. The Wolves were led by Anderson and Kadeim Jones who both scored seven points in the first half.

  • Back to back three pointers from Deng Nhial cut the DSU lead to 52-43 with 12:24 remaining.

  • Another pair of threes from Nhial cut the Statesmen's lead to five, 54-49 with 9:55 remaining.
  • DSU led 58-53 going into the 7:54 media timeout.
  • A jumper by Seth Brown-Carter cut the Statesmen lead to four, 60-56 with 6:28 left in the second half.
  • The Statesmen's lead was cut to 67-64 at the 3:43 media timeout.
  • West Georgia took the lead 68-67 after Kovi Tate's layup with 1:44 left.
  • Thanks to Keyshuan Streets layup and free throw DSU led 70-68 with 1:30 left.
  • A jumper from UWG's Jones tied the game at 70-70 with 1:04 remaining.
  • Neither team was able to score in the final seconds of the game, resulting in overtime with the game tied 70-70.
  • As UWG took a timeout with 1:01 left in the game the Statesmen had a six-point lead, 80-74 lead.
  • The Statesmen have were able to comeback and win 84-74 in overtime.
 
TURNING POINT
  • The early success for the Statesmen outside of the arch in the first half allowed the Statesmen to withstand the Wolves' comeback in the second half.

  • Delta State finished the night shooting 56.3 percent from behind the arch.
