GAME NOTES
CLEVELAND, Miss -- The Delta State University softball team wrapped up the first week of Gulf South Conference play at the University of Alabama in Huntsville with a record of 0-3. Delta State lost game one of the series in a hard fought contest only to let the game slip away in the final inning by a score of 7-5. The Green and White dropped the next two games against the Chargers with scores of 21-7 on Saturday and on Sunday, 9-1. The Lady Statesmen will host their first home games of the year this weekend. Christian Brothers will come to Cleveland to continue Gulf South Conference play.
OPPONENTS: Christian Brothers has a record of 5-6. The Buccaneers opened the season losing their first two games but then won the next two games. CBU also competed in the McGhee-Hawkins Invitational. While there, they again had two wins and two loses. The Bucs opened GSC play traveling to Auburn-Montgomery last week. Christian Brothers lost both games on Saturday by scores of 10-0 and 9-2. They picked up a win on Sunday with a score of 2-1.
NEWCOMERS MAKING AN IMPACT FOR LADY STATESMEN:
Alyssa Gover had an outstanding weekend, finishing with a .556 batting average with two RBI, one double, and one home run.
Julie Scheuermann also had a great weekend hitting .429 with three RBI, and one home run as well.
Haley Simpson posted a .250 batting average with two doubles. Mary Sweatt finished the weekend with a .250 average. All four freshman ladies drew starts in all three of the games over the weekend.
IN THE CIRCLE:
Olivia Burns had a tough weekend going 0-2. Burns finished the weekend with five walks and only four strikeouts.
Emily Baker was struggled as well going 0-1.
EXPERIENCE IN THE INFIELD:
Taylor Picou had the best weekend for the Green and White with a .714 batting average while also driving in three runs. Picou leads the team in batting this season with an .345 average. Six Lady Statesmen finished the past weekend with a fielding percentage of 1.000.
UPCOMING: The Lady Statesmen will travel to the University of West Florida next with a double header on Saturday at 1 PM and 3 PM.
