PREVIEW: Lady Statesmen Head to Pensacola to Face West Florida

GAME NOTES

CLEVELAND, Miss -- 
This past weekend, the Delta State University softball team wrapped up the second week of Gulf South Conference play hosting Christian Brothers University and winning the series two games to one. Delta State lost game one in a hard fought contest 3-0. The Green-and-White won the next two games against the Bucs with scores of 7-6 and 4-1 on Saturday and Sunday, respectively. The Lady Statesmen will travel to Pensacola, Florida to face the University of West Florida this upcoming weekend. West Florida were the pre-season favorite to win the GSC this year.

OPPONENTS: West Florida heads into the weekend with a record of 10-6.  The Argos opened the year playing in the Gulf Coast Invitational going 2-2. They picked up wins over No. 9 Florida Tech and Miles. UWF then played in the Florida Tech Invitational going 4-1. While there they picked up wins over Florida Tech and No. 25 Saint Leo. The Argonauts opened GSC play at Montevallo. They wrapped up opening weekend going 2-1. Last week, UWF hosted Spring Hill for a mid-week game, which they won 12-4. Last weekend, the Argos traveled to West Alabama for a series. They left Livingston, Ala. with two wins and one loss. Teala Howard leads the Argos with a batting average of .429 ,while Grace Gilbert is second on the team with a .426 average. 

NEWCOMERS MAKING AN IMPACT FOR LADY STATESMENHaley Simpson posted a .333 batting average last week. Jaclyn Deason had two RBI on the weekend while posting a .300 batting average. Jenny Griggers showed her power this weekend by hitting two home runs had a  .300 average. Mary "MC" Sweatt had a .250 average on the weekend with one RBI. Julie Scheuermann had a game winning home run for the second game of the series versus CBU. Scheuermann also had two RBI on the weekend. All five freshman ladies drew starts in at least two of the games.

IN THE CIRCLE: Olivia Burns went 0-1 this past week. Burns finished the weekend with six strikeouts and an era of 1.65. Emily Baker made two appearances in relief going 2-0 with an 1.40 era. Baker came in Sunday with the bases loaded in the third inning and struck two batters out to not allow any runs.  

EXPERIENCE IN THE INFIELDTaylor Picou had the best weekend for the Green and White with a .556 batting average driving in three runs, while hitting two home runs as well. Picou leads the team in batting this season with an .395 average. Kailyn Lofton finished the weekend with a .400 batting average.

UPCOMING: The Lady Statesmen will host the University of Auburn at Montgomery on Friday for a single game at 5 PM and a two game series on Saturday starting at noon.
