Lady Statesmen Head to Searcy, Ark. For Harding Invitational

GAME NOTES

CLEVELAND, Miss.-The Delta State University Lady Statesmen finished opening weekend with a record of 1-3. The Lady Statesmen were competitive in every game but just came up a little short against Rollins College, Nova Southeastern, and Tuskegee. The Lady Statesmen showed a lot of promise after having to replace several starters from last season. The Green and White this weekend will head to Searcy, Ark. to compete in the Harding University Invitational on Saturday and Sunday. Delta State will play Midwestern State and Northeastern State on Saturday at 12 and 4:30 PM respectively. Then on Sunday, the Lady Statesmen will play Drury at noon followed by the host Harding at 4 PM.

OPPONENTS: The Lady Statesmen will take on four opponents this coming weekend. On Saturday, February 8 they will take on Midwestern State and Northeastern State. MSU opened the season going 0-3. MSU lost to West Alabama, Mississippi College, and Palm Beach Atlantic (FLA) in the opening weekend. Last year they finished the season 22-19. Northeastern hasn't played yet this season. On Sunday, February 9, the Lady Statesmen will play Drury University and Harding University. Drury open the 2020 season by going 1-2 the opening weekend. Drury defeated Union but dropped two games to #16 North Georgia and Rollins College. They finished last season with a 36-23 record. Harding came out of opening weekend  2-2. Harding picked up two wins against Texas A&M Int'l and #15 Cameron they dropped two games to #21 Tarleton State and #10 Texas A&M Commerce. They finished last season 35-23. 

YOUTH ABOUNDS ON LADY STATESMEN: The Lady Statesmen had a great showing from the new comers on the team. Callie Newman introduced herself to everyone by hitting .462 on the weekend. Newman had 13 at bats with six hits and three RBI's. Jenny Griggers wasn't going to let Callie Newman have all the fun. Griggers debuted this weekend by hitting .333 on the weekend. Griggers made nine plate appearances getting three hits. Jaclyn Deason finished the weekend hitting .250 on 12 plate appearances. Haley Simpson finished the weekend hitting .214 with 14 plate appearances. The three freshman lady statesmen started all four games on the weekend. 

IN THE CIRCLE: Olivia Burns began her lady statesmen career by making two starts with three appearances. Burns gave up 19 hits on the weekend but she only allowed six runs during her 15 innings of work. Olivia Burns was impressive on the mound striking out 13 batters this weekend.

EXPERIENCE IN THE OUTFIELD: Olivia Dick capped off the weekend with a batting average of .838 and two RBI's. Dick also had an outstanding opening weekend by posting a 1.000 fielding percentage.
