DADE CITY, Fla. — The Delta State University men's golf team opened play at the Saint Leo Invitational on Monday with a strong first-round showing. After finishing two rounds the Statesmen are in 10th place with a team score of 274 (-2) at Lake Jovita Golf & Country Club. Round two will conclude tomorrow morning with 13 of the 16 teams concluding the second round.
The Statesmen were paced by
Ty Werynski, who fired a 69 (-3) followed by a 68 (-4) to sit at 7th individually after 36 holes. Werynski's round featured consistent play throughout the day, keeping him within striking distance of the tournament leaders heading into the third round.
After the first round,
Hayden Webber followed with an impressive one-under-par 71, placing him tied for 19th overall after the first round.
Niko Salmi added an even-par 72 to finish tied for 34th, while
Peter Blazevic also carded a 72 in his opening round performance.
Evans Haynie rounded out the Delta State lineup with an 81.
In the second round, Blazevic, Haynie and Salmi both shot 74 (+2) while Webber shot a 77 (+5).
As a team, Delta State's 574 places them among a tightly contested leaderboard, with 13 teams finishing their second-round tomorrow morning at 7:30 p.m. (CT).
The Statesmen will look to build on their solid opening performance as play continues at the Saint Leo Invitational, aiming to climb the leaderboard in the third round at the par-72, 7,121-yard Lake Jovita GCC South Course.
