DADE CITY, Fla. — The Delta State University men's golf team secured a top-10 finish Tuesday at the Saint Leo Invitational, tying for ninth place with a three-round total of 862 (+10) at Lake Jovita Golf & Country Club – South Course. The Statesmen battled through a competitive 17-team field and were led by an outstanding individual performance from senior
Ty Werynski.
Werynski paced Delta State throughout the tournament, finishing tied for fourth overall with a three-round score of 207 (-9). He opened with a 69 (-3) in round one and followed with a strong 68 (-4) in the second round to put himself firmly in contention. Werynski closed his tournament with a steady 70 (-2), securing his highest finish of the spring season and one of the top individual performances in the field.
Hayden Webber provided a key contribution for the Statesmen, finishing tied for 42nd with a total score of 218 (+2). After opening with a 71 (-1), Webber rebounded from a challenging second round with an impressive 70 (-2) in the final round to climb the leaderboard.
Peter Blazevic and
Niko Salmi each finished tied for 57th, both posting identical 220 (+4) totals across the three rounds. Blazevic recorded rounds of 72, 74, and 74, while Salmi matched those scores exactly to provide consistency in the Delta State lineup.
Evans Haynie rounded out the score for Delta State, finishing 94th with a total of 234 (+18). Haynie posted rounds of 81, 74, and 79 during the tournament.
As a team, Delta State opened with a solid 284 (-4) in the first round before posting scores of 290 (+2) and 288 (E) over the final two rounds. The Statesmen finished tied with Palm Beach Atlantic and ahead of several strong programs in the highly competitive field.
Florida Southern claimed the team title with an 839 (-25), while Saint Leo finished second at 841 (-23) and Nova Southeastern placed third at 843 (-21).
Delta State will look to build on the strong individual showing from Werynski and the team's top-10 finish as the Statesmen continue their spring schedule.
