Steven Simmons, a senior midfielder for the Statesmen Soccer team, has been named the GoStatesmen.com Male Srudent-Athlete of the Week after leading Delta State to its first ever postseason victory and an appearance in the Gulf South Conference Championship Match last weekend in Pensacola, Fla. Â
The Liverpool, England native was named Most Outstanding Player for the GSC Tournament for his play on the pitch. Â The captain for the Statesmen scored two goals in DSU's 3-2 win over West Florida in the semifinals. Â It was DSU's first postseason victory in its first game. Â Simmons' first goal of the match in the 13' was also the first postseason score in Statesman history. Â
In Sunday's championship match, Simmons once again played a part in DSU's lone goal, delivering an assist on Sebastian Ridout's goal. Â
Simmons, who was also named to the All-GSC First Team, played in 19 games for the Statesmen in 2012 with 19 starts and logged 1730 minutes of action. Â He scored five goals on 40 shots, while putting 17 shots on goal. Â
He also had four assists, giving him 14 points on the season. Â Always an emotional leader, Simmons picked up seven yellow cards and one red card. Â He closed his career rankings in the Statesmen top 10 list all time in points, goals, assists, shots and shots on goal.Â
