Steven Simmons, a senior midfielder for the Statesmen Soccer team, has been named the GoStatesmen.com Male Srudent-Athlete of the Week after leading Delta State to its first ever postseason victory and an appearance in the Gulf South Conference Championship Match last weekend in Pensacola, Fla.  

The Liverpool, England native was named Most Outstanding Player for the GSC Tournament for his play on the pitch.  The captain for the Statesmen scored two goals in DSU's 3-2 win over West Florida in the semifinals.  It was DSU's first postseason victory in its first game.  Simmons' first goal of the match in the 13' was also the first postseason score in Statesman history.  

In Sunday's championship match, Simmons once again played a part in DSU's lone goal, delivering an assist on Sebastian Ridout's goal.  

Simmons, who was also named to the All-GSC First Team, played in 19 games for the Statesmen in 2012 with 19 starts and logged 1730 minutes of action.  He scored five goals on 40 shots, while putting 17 shots on goal.  

He also had four assists, giving him 14 points on the season.  Always an emotional leader, Simmons picked up seven yellow cards and one red card.  He closed his career rankings in the Statesmen top 10 list all time in points, goals, assists, shots and shots on goal.
