TAMPA, Fla. –
Marqueys Brown dunked home the game-winning basket to lift the Delta State Statesmen to a 58-56 win over the host Tampa Spartans in the final game of the University of Tampa Classic on Tuesday.
Brown (Memphis, Tenn./Crichton College) grabbed the offensive rebound off a missed jumper from
Chad Akins (Madison, Miss./Madison Central HS) and slammed home the carom as time expired and lifted Delta State (8-3) to its third consecutive win.
Roderick Ollie (Indianola, Miss./UAB) scored 18 points and secured eight rebounds to lead the Statesmen.
Joe McCray (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Univ. of Nebraska) recorded a double-double by scoring 10 points and grabbing a game-high 12 rebounds.
Eric Spencer (Marion, Ark./Arkansas-Fort Smith) came off the Delta State bench to score 12 points for the Statesmen.
The Spartans erased a six-point Delta State lead in the final minute and tied the game on Callum Townsend's 3-pointer with eight seconds remaining in the game before the Statesmen came away with the buzzer-beater victory.
Rashad Callaway scored 16 points to lead Tampa, which included a 13-of-16 showing from the free throw line. He was 1-of-18 from the field.
As a team, the Statesmen only got to the free throw line nine times and made seven of their charity shots.
Brown scored six points for Delta State on 3-of-3 shooting.
The Statesmen will be idle until after the Christmas holidays and return to action Jan. 5 when they travel to Concordia-Selma.
