Statesmen and Lady Statesmen win season opener at Arkansas-Little Rock

Little Rock, Ark. - First year head coach Dan'l Murray and the Delta State Statesmen and Lady Statesmen swimming and diving teams opened up the 2010-2011 season with a pair of victories at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock on Saturday.

The Statesmen won their meet with a combined score of 333 as the women scored 171 as a team and the men added their team score of 162 to take both individual meets and the overall combined victory.

In the men's meet the Statesmen won eight events including victories for Statesmen Alex Lorenz, Wolfgang Marringer and Jake Blegan.

 Lorenz, a junior from Geislingen, Germany took first in the 100 yard Butterfly with a score of nine points.

Junior Wolfgang Marringer brought home victories in both the 500 and 1000 yard freestyle events.  Jake
Blegen, a freshman from Katy Texas helped his team win the 200 yard medley relay as well as taking first in the 100 yard backstroke.  

Christian Barrett brought home the win in the 50 yard freestyle with nine total points while Cole Jolley received first place in the 100o yard freestyle.

In The women's meet the Lady Statesmen brought home victories in the 200 yard medley relay, the 200 yard IM, where freshman, Laura Nichols came in first place. Mary Katherine Waddell took first in the 100 yard freestyle for the Lady Statesmen while Maria Torres and Laura Nichols both recorded wins for DSU. Torres took first place in the 500 free style while Laura Nichols brought home a victory in the 100 yard Breaststroke.

The Statesmen and Lady Statesmen return to the pool on November 19th when they face Henderson State at a meet in Arkadelphia, Ark.
