Lady Statesmen split road doubleheader

ALEXANDRIA,La.-The Delta State University Lady Statesmen softball team split a pair of games against Louisiana State University-Alexandria on Wednesday.

DSU (12-6) ran away with game one, 12-0 in six innings, but lost their momentum in game two, when the Generals (2-15) claimed a 7-5 victory.

The Lady Statesmen jumped on top 3-0 in the top of the first inning, and kept up that form the rest of the way.

Senior Chelsea Carr had one of the best games in her DSU career at the plate, as she went 3-for-3 with 3 RBI's. Shortstop Brittany Eikner also added three hits in the game, in a 3-for-4 performance. Brooke Allgood also had a 3 RBI game, as she went 2-for-4 at the plate.

Crista Richard, Edie Oliver, Paige Silverthorn and Nikki D'Aurelio each added two hits for DSU.

D'Aurelio's two hits marked the first time in her DSU career that she had multiple hits in a game.

Oliver shut down the Generals from the circle. The lefty went all six innings, allowing just five hits, with four strikeouts.

In game two, one of three Lady Statesmen errors in the game led to three runs for the Generals.

After a pair of hits to start the bottom of the third inning off of DSU starter Brittany Gonzales, a throwing error by Carr led to a pair of runs for LSU-A.

The Generals scored three runs in the frame to push their lead to 4-1.

DSU bounced back in the sixth inning, when Kim Hensley drove in a pair of runs with an RBI double. The Lady Statesmen then tied the score at four, after an error by LSU-A.

The Generals added three more unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth off of Kate Moreland, pushing the score to 7-4.

The Lady Statesmen made a threat in the top of the seventh, scoring one run, but were retired to end the game.

Kate Moreland (4-2) took the loss after coming in relief of Gonzales in the fourth. Gonzales went 3.0 innings, allowing four runs, one of which was earned. Moreland allowed three runs, none of which were earned.

DSU finished the game with seven hits, while LSU-A had eight.

Oliver and Carr were the only Lady Statesmen with multiple hits.

The Lady Statesmen will return to action Sat. March 6, as they open up Gulf South Conference play at University Field against Arkansas Monticello in a four game series. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
