Henderson State Invitational Results
CLEVELAND - The Delta State Statesmen and Lady Statesmen swimming and diving teams wrapped up their first meet of the 2011-12 season Saturday afternoon at the Henderson State Invitational held in Bryant, Ark. The Statesmen and Lady Statesmen took home one main event win and several runner-up finishes.
Tobias Tombers, a freshman from Duesseldorf, Germany, picked up a win in his first collegiate meet, winning the 200-yard breastroke with a time of 2:10.32. Tombers edged out Matt Pope, of Ouachita Baptist by .12 seconds for the win.
Tombers also finished second in the 100-yard breastroke with a time of 1:00.50.
Several Statesmen and Lady Statesmen took runner-up finishes in the two-day event.
Stephanie Gonzalez finished the 400-yard medley in second place with a time of 4:42.33. Gonzalez also took third place in the 200-yard backstroke, with a 2:18. 07, and the 200-yard butterfly, with a time of 2:14.36.
Ben Vaughn matched Gonzalez on the men's side. He took home a second-place finish in the 400-yard medley with a 4:12.03. Vaughn also finished third in the 200-yard backstroke, coming in with a time of 1:58.72, and the 220-yard medley with a 1:59.63..
Yvan Nys finished runner-up in the Men's 200-yard freestyle event, finishing in a time of 1:44.46. Nys also finished third in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 53.82 and the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 47.38, just one-hundredth of a second off of second.
The Nichols sisters finished with a pair of second place finishes in the breast stoke events. Laura took home a second place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke with a 1:08.11. Heidi came in second in the 200-yard breaststroke, finishing in 2:30.45. Heidi also took third in the 200-yard medley with a finals time of 2:20.28.
Dani Meerholz took home a second place finish in the Women's 500-yard freestyle race with a time of 5:15.75.
In the Men's 500-yard freestyle,
Vlad Zinca finished .04 seconds behind Javier Sossa, of Oklahoma Baptist, for the win. Zinca finished with a time of 4:45.60. Zinca also had a second-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly with a 1:56.52 time.
