Statesmen and Lady Statesmen Swimming Gear Up For Dual Meet With OBU

CLEVELAND - The Delta State Statesmen and Lady Statesmen Swimming teams will be participating in their second straight meet in Arkansas as the teams will participate in a dual-meet this Saturday at Ouachita Baptist. The meet is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. in the Bill Vining Arena's multi-sport complex.

The Statesmen and Lady Statesmen met with the Tigersharks swim teams last weekend at the Henderson State Invitational that was held in Bryant, Ark. The Tigersharks edged out Delta State in the final totals by 25 points, 824-799. In the women's overall, the difference was 18 points while seven points settled the men's overall.

With such a close race last weekend, there are sure to be some battles this weekend in both the women and men's competitions.

“We had a close race with OBU,” said Delta State head coach Dan'l Murray. “This weekends race could really go either way and it should lead to some great races.”

For the Statesmen and Lady Statesmen swim teams, the meet this weekend will be only the second competitive competition this season after last weekend's two-day meet.

It will be a chance for several freshmen to match and improve on their first collegiate meets last week.

Tobias Tombers, a freshman, picked up a win in his first collegiate meet, winning the 200-yard breastroke with a time of 2:10.32. Tombers edged out Matt Pope, of Ouachita Baptist by .12 seconds for the win. He also finished second in the 100-yard breastroke.

Yvan Nys, another freshman, finished runner-up in the Men's 200-yard freestyle event, finishing in a time of 1:44.46. Nys also finished third in the 100-yard backstroke and the 100-yard freestyle.

Vlad Zinca finished in second place in the Men's 500-yard freestyle and the 200-yard butterfly.

On the women's side, freshman Dani Meerholz, took home a second place finish in the Women's 500-yard freestyle.

Returning swimmers Stephanie Gonzalez and the Nichols sisters, Heidi and Laura, will look to build off of impressive results in last weeks meet.

Gonzalez finished the 400-yard medley in second place and also took third place in the 200-yard backstroke and the 200-yard butterfly.

Laura Nichols took home a second place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke and Heidi Nichols came in second in the 200-yard breaststroke. Heidi also took third in the 200-yard medley.

Maria Torres will return to the site of her first collegiate meet win looking for similar results. Torres won the 500-yard freestyle event last year at Ouachita Baptist.

Other returning Statesmen and Lady Statesmen who won last season at Ouachita Baptist include: Heidi Nichols in the 100-yard breaststroke, Wolfgang Mairinger in the 500-yard freestyle, and Chris Ashton in the 1000-yard freestyle.

The Tigersharks enter this weekend's dual-meet having participated in four events this season. After losing the first two events of the season, dual-meets against Henderson State and Incarnate Word, the Tigersharks finished second overall at the Hendrix Classic and third last weekend at the Henderson State Invitational.
