- The Delta State Statesmen and Lady Statesmen Swimming and Diving teams wrapped up the DSU Christmas Invitational with another day of strong performances. Vlad Zinca and Maria Torres Perez shattered Statesmen and Lady Statesmen all-time records Sunday afternoon, the third and final day of the annual meet.

Torres kicked off the meet a swim that was exciting down to the wire. The sophomore from Lima, Peru swam stride for stride with Michelle Tipton (Evansville) in the 1650 Freestyle, commonly referred to as the mile.

Tipton edged out Torres (17:06.05) by .34 seconds overall, but Torres topped the oldest Lady Statesmen record by over 22 seconds. Kristin Balius held the previous record at 17:28.89 set back in 2005.

Zinca set a new Statesmen record in the 200 Butterfly event (1:48.48), winning in convincing fashion. The previous Statesmen record was 1:51.00, set by Patrick Weyrich in 2008.

Not to be overlooked in the two record setting races were Kelcie Winterrowd and Michael DuBose.

Winterrowd capped off a great weekend individually with her performance in the 1650 Freestyle event, setting a personal best and NCAA 'B' cut time of 17:45.90 in a third place swim.

DuBose finished second in the 200 Butterfly (1:53.03), a season-low time and also a NCAA 'B' cut time.

Statesmen Clayton Boyd was another to have a breakout weekend. Boyd capped off a meet that saw four personal best times swam with a win in the 200 Breaststroke (2:06.43). Boyd edged out Statesmen Tobias Tombers (2:07.75) for the victory and both set personal best and NCAA 'B' cut times in the event.

Heidi Nichols continued with her strong weekend on Sunday, winning the 200 Breaststroke (2:21.40), setting a good NCAA 'B' cut time.

Wolfgang Mairinger and Ben Vaughan continued their dominance in the 1650 Freestyle event with another solid performance this weekend. Mairinger won the event (15:54.05 and Vaughan finished second (16:04.15), with both setting solid NCAA 'B' cut times.

Chris Ashton (16:33.63) and Joey Morgan (16:42.91) finished fourth and fifth in the mile swim, to give the Statesmen four of the top five spots in the event.

Stephanie Gonzalez (2:09.04) and Kaci Bolls (2:11.88) finished second and third in the 200 Butterfly, Gonzalez set a personal best in the event and Bolls placed a season best, just .1 seconds off of her personal best mark.

Yvan Nys continued his success in the sprint races this weekend, posting a personal best an NCAA 'B' cut time (46.75) with a second place finish in the 100 Freestyle event.

The Statesmen and Lady Statesmen both closed out the meet with second place finishes in the 400 Freestyle relays, capping off an excellent weekend overall for Delta State swimming.

The Statesmen took the overall team title and the Lady Statesmen took second place overall, only falling short of Division I Evansville.

Delta State Swimming and Diving will now head into the winter break before competing in the Tunica Invitational on the first full weekend of the 2012. The Tunica Invitational is a two-day event that will take place January 6-7.
