Delta State Swimming and Diving gets big win in dual meet over OBU

CLEVELAND
- The Delta State Statesmen and Lady Statesmen swimming and diving team defeated Ouachita Baptist Saturday afternoon 236-208 in a dual meet victory. The victory was the first victory for all Statesmen and Lady Statesmen participants against the Tigersharks.
 
Laura Nichols led the charge for the Lady Statesmen, who won the women's side of the meet 109-105. Nichols set lifetime best times in victories in the 50-Freestyle (24.82) and 100-Freestyle (54.81).
 
Heidi Nichols had a pair of event wins as well. Heidi had a convincing win of over three seconds in the 200-Breaststroke (2:29.29), which helped seal the victory for the Lady Statesmen in the final events. She also edged out Piper Marshburn (.2 seconds) in the 200-Backstroke.
 
The Statesmen defeated the Tigersharks 127-103 on the men's side. The Statesmen had several high scoring events, including a Wolfgang Mairinger led sweep of the top-four spots in the 1000-Freestyle. Chris Ashton, Gabriel Cruz, and Trevor Hopper took second, third, and fourth in the event.
 
Mairinger (4:54.24) and Ashton (4:55.76) took the top two spots in the 500-Freestyle as well.
 
Vlad Zinca had a pair of wins in the 200-Medley (1:54.92) and 200-Butterfly, winning the events by at least two seconds.
 
The Lady Statesmen's freestyle specialist Dani Meerholz and Maria Torres Perez each had a win and a second place finish in the meet.
 
Meerholz won the 200-Freestyle (1:56.70) by over two seconds. Marshburn took third in the event (2:03.34).
 
In the 500-Freestyle, Torres took the victory (5:09.75) over Meerholz (5:12.53), as the Lady Statesmen went on to take four of the top five spots in the event. Kelcie Winterrowd and Elizabeth Frye finished fourth and fifth.
 
In the 1000-Freestyle event, Torres and Rebekah Napier-Jameson took second and third place. Napier-Jameson's finish (10:50.61) was a new lifetime best, over nine seconds faster then her previous best time (10:59.80) set in Tunica last week. In the last two weeks, Napier-Jameson has shaved over 23 seconds off of her time in the event.
 
Yvan Nys continued to excel in the Backstroke, winning the 200-Backstroke (1:55.35) in a one-two finish for the Statesmen. Jake Blegen (1:57.41) finished second.
 
In the diving events, Emir Sonmez picked up a pair of wins. Somnez won the 1-meter diving with a score of 160.85, a season and career best. He also won the 3-meter with a score of 140.15.
