Swimming and Diving set to head to Missouri for pair of meets

CLEVELAND
- The Delta State University Statesmen and Lady Statesmen will return to competition this weekend after a few weeks off. The Statesmen will swim in a meet Friday night at Missouri S&T. The Statesmen and Lady Statesmen will take on Drury University on Saturday in a dual meet. The weekend trip marks the first non Division I opponent this season for DSU, as well as the first New South Intercollegiate Swim Conference opponents this season.

PARTICIPATING TEAMS
The Delta State University Statesmen will swim against the Missouri S&T University Miners on Friday night in a dual meet in Rolla, Mo. The Statesmen and Lady Statesmen will swim against the Panthers and Lady Panthers of Drury University in a dual meet in Springfield, Mo on Saturday.

THE BREAKDOWN
The Statesmen and Lady Statesmen are coming off a tough two weeks of training and will swim in competition for the first time since swimming at Western Kentucky on October 13. The trip to Missouri will include swims against a pair of New South Intercollegiate Swim Conference teams.

BIG IMPACT EARLY ON
Statesmen newcomers Andy McColl and Karl-Richard Hennebach made a big impact in the opening two meets of the season. In the duos very first race, they joined Vlad Zinca and Christian Barrett to give Alabama a run in the 200-Medley Relay, finishing with a 1:33.47, the nation's top Division II time, just .19 seconds off the pace of Alabama. Hennebach went on to win in his next event, the 100-Backstroke.

At Western Kentucky, Hennebach picked up his second straight win in the 100-Backstroke with a 51.26. He also took third place in the 100-Freestyle improving his time over a full second from last week's 48.65, finishing with a 47.62. Hennebach was also apart of the men's 200-Freestyle relay winning team, finishing with a time of 1:26.36. William Iles, Yvan Nys and McColl were also apart of the team. McColl finished as a three-event winner in the meet, also winning the 50-Freestyle with a 21.41 and the 200-Freestyle with a 1:43.98.

AT THE TOP OF THE CHARTS
Several of the Statesmen and Lady Statesmen find themselves in the top 20 nationally in Division II in events through the early part of the season.

Sophomore Vlad Zinca leads the way for Delta State, holding the top time in the nation in the 200 Butterfly event. Zinca swam a 1:50.83 in the season opening meet at Alabama. In the last event at Western Kentucky, Zinca posted the nation's second fastest time in the 100 Butterfly. The Pitesti, Romania native swam a 50.40.

On the women's side, the twins, Laura and Heidi Nichols each have a top 20 time. Laura currently holds the 11th fastest time in the 100 Breaststroke event, swimming a 1:07.53 in the team's last meet at WKU. Heidi also set her top mark at WKU, swimming the nation's 19th fastest time in the 200 Breaststroke event with a 2:29.06.

Andy McColl has the most top 20 times for the Delta State swimming programs, currently holding three of the top times. McColl's best time is a 46.54 in the 100 Freestyle at Bama, which is currently the seventh fastest time. The freshman holds the 12th fastest time in the 200 Freestyle with a 1:43.98 at WKU. McColl also holds the 14th fastest time in the nation in the 50 Freestyle, swimming a 21.35 at Alabama.

Maria Torres holds two top 20 times, the most for the Lady Statesmen. Torres holds the 12th fastest time in the nation in the 1000 Freestyle after swimming a 10:41.80 at Bama. At WKU, she swam the 15th fastest time in the 500 Free with a time of 5:12.94.

Karl-Richard Hennebach holds the third fastest time in the 100 Back, swimming a 50.97 in a victory at Alabama. Dani Meerholz holds the 18th fastest time in the 500 Free, swimming a 5:13.53 at WKU. Zeke Basco has the sixth fastest 200 Fly time with a 1:54.31 swam at Alabama. Yvan Nys holds the 20th fastest 200 Backstroke time with a 1:57.16.
