Delta State Swimming and Diving has strong showing at Alabama

TUSCALOOSA, Ala.
– The Statesmen and Lady Statesmen Swimming and Diving teams wrapped up their first meet of the season Saturday with a strong showing at the University of Alabama.
 
Vlad Zinca and Karl-Richard Hennebach picked up wins in the 32-event format and both teams had several strong finishes.
 
Zinca picked up right where he left off last season at the national championships. Zinca picked up a first in the 100-Butterfly event, closing strong to finish with a 50.44, winning by .2 seconds. The time picked up a NCAA 'B' cut time for the sophomore.
 
The Pitesti, Romania native also finished second with a 1:50.83 in the 200-Butterfly, finishing .21 seconds off the winning pace. Zinca also set an NCAA 'B' cut time with the race.
 
Hennebach had a strong swim in his first meet as a Statesman. The German native took first overall in the 100-Backstroke with a 50.97, edging Reese Shirey of Alabama by .07 seconds. The time also was a NCAA 'B' cut time.
 
On the Lady Statesmen side, Maria Torres started off the event strong with a second place finish in the 1000-Freestyle with a 10:41.80. The junior also finished third in the 500-Freestyle.
 
Hannah Core picked up a win among scoring swimmers in the 200-Individual Medley. The freshman finished with a 2:16.32 in the event.
 
Freshman Andy McColl had a strong showing in his first event as well, helping the Statesmen to a tight second place finish in the opening relay, just .19 seconds off the winning pace.
 
The Geelong, Australia native finished second in the 50-Freestyle, touching the wall with a time of 21.35. McColl also took second in the 100-Freestyle, finishing with a 46.54, just off an NCAA 'B' cut time.
 
In diving, Connor Bennett scored a 210.00 to edge out fellow Statesmen Emir Sonmez (204.45) in the 3-meter diving.
 
The Statesmen and Lady Statesmen will return to action next Saturday, October 13, with a meet at Western Kentucky.
