Delta State Swimming and Diving Meet Notes - Week 4 (PDF)
CLEVELAND - The No. 23 Delta State University Statesmen and No. 24 Lady Statesmen will swim against the No. 17 Henderson State University Reddies and No. 23 Lady Reddies on Friday night in a dual meet in Arkadelphia, Ark. The Statesmen and Lady Statesmen will swim against the No. 18 Tigersharks and the Lady Tigersharks of Ouachita Baptist University in a dual meet in Arkadelphia, Ark. on Saturday.
The Breakdown
The Statesmen and Lady Statesmen are working through the heavy workload of the fall semester as the teams gear up for the final dual meets of the fall season, with a pair of invitationals to follow to close out 2012. The trip to Arkansas this weekend will include swims against a pair of New South Intercollegiate Swim Conference teams.
Freshmen making big impacts early on
Several Statesmen and Lady Statesmen newcomers have made strong strides early on for Delta State.
At Missouri S&T, Anderson took third in the 1000-Free with a 10:08.00, the fastest time in the event for DSU this season and 5.44 seconds faster than his previous time. Anderson then bettered his time at Drury, finishing third with a 10:02.23.
Paul Stewart also had a big improvement, finishing nearly two seconds faster than his previous best time in the 200-Breaststroke with a 2:14.30, also a top time for Delta State this season.
Hannah Core edged her season best time in the 50-Freesyle against Drury. Core finished third with a 25.38 in the event. Core also took second in the 100-Freetyle with a 55.44.
Shawnee Gundry swam in the 100-Backstroke for the Lady Statesmen for the first time this season at Drury, finishing in third with a 1:02.41, over a second faster than the previous top Lady Statesmen time this season.
Hennebach setting top marks
Freshman
Karl-Richard Hennebach continued his dominant run in the 100-Backstoke event this season, winning at Drury with a time of 51.46. The time was just slower then his personal best this season, but .62 seconds faster than second place. The freshman has won all three 100-Backstoke events competed in this season.
Henneback also won the 50-Freestyle at Drury, finishing with a 21.18 for a team and personal best this season. He also finished second in the 200-Individual Medley against Missouri S&T, swimming the fastest time by a Statesmen in the event all season with a 1:58.79.
Sophomores finding top form
Yvan Nys nearly matched a season best time in the 200-Backstroke (1:57.16) at Missouri S&T with a second place finish (1:57.17). The next day, Nys went nearly a second faster than his season best time in the 200-Freestyle, finishing in third place at Drury with a 1:48.54.
Dani Meerholz put together a strong swimming performance in the 200-Freestyle event against Drury. Meerholz finished third with a 1:57.67, 1.21 seconds faster than her previous season best time this year. The sophomore also shaved 1.49 seconds off of her season best time in the 500-Freestyle, finishing in second place with a 5:12.04.
Nichols reaches new best time
Laura Nichols won the 100-Breaststroke event at Drury two weeks ago, winning by over two seconds with a 1:06.45. The time for Nichols was over a second faster than her season best coming into the meet (1:07.53). The time also set a new in-season best mark for the Junior.
