Swimming and Diving sweep Henderson State

ARKADELPHIA, Ark.
- Delta State swimming and diving put together a sweep of Henderson State as the Lady Statesmen won 126-110 and the Statesmen won 124-119 Friday night.

Laura Nichols, Maria Torres and Karl-Richard Hennebach each picked up multiple event wins on the night to lead the way for the green-and-white.

Lady Statesmen Shawnee Gundry, Nichols, Stephanie Gonzalez, and Hannah Core got things rolling with a big victory in the 400-Medley Relay, finishing with a 4:03.29 for a victory of almost 16 seconds.

Nichols and Hennebach each picked up their first individual wins on the night in the 50-Freestyle. Nichols won by .7 seconds over Henderson State's Erin Beu, touching the wall at 24.83. The time was the fastest for a Lady Statesmen this season. Gundry took third (25.59) in the event.

Nichols also won the 200-Breaststroke in convincing fashion, swimming a 2:26.84 for a victory of 7.5 seconds. The win was her fastest time of the season in the event and the fastest for the Lady Statesmen.

Hennebach took first with a 21.33 in the 50-Freestyle, .43 seconds ahead of Henderson State's Denver Dawson. William Iles and Nick Zorn took third (22.10) and fourth (22.55) in the event.

Hennebach won the 100-Freestyle event as well, winning by 1.2 seconds over second place. The freshman finished with a 46.25, a NCAA "B" cut time in the event and the fastest time by a Statesmen this season.

Torres picked up her first win of the night in the 1000-Freestyle, leading the Lady Statesmen to a sweep of the top three spots. Torres finished with a time of 10:46.06.

Rebekah Napier-Jameson took second place with a 11:07.19, just ahead of Kelcie Winterrowd at 11:08.54. Winterrowd finished nearly 20 seconds ahead of the first Lady Reddies swimmer.

Torres, Elizabeth Frye, and Napier-Jameson took the top three spots in the 500-Freestyle. For Torres, her second win of the night came after touching the wall at 5:18.88.

Frye and Napier-Jameson each set season best marks with their finishes of 5:21.76 and 5:25.48, respectively.

Frye also took third place in the 200-Freestyle with a 2:01.35, in her first swim in the event this season. Dani Meerholz just missed the victory, finishing second in the event for the Lady Statesmen with a 1:57.79, .03 seconds off of Lauren Sutton's winning time for HSU.

Meerholz finished third in the 100-Freestyle touching in at 56.11. Gundry took second for the Lady Statesmen with a 54.81.

Meerholz joined with Kelsey Fallstrom, Torres, and Core for a Lady Statesmen victory in the 400-Freestyle Relay, helping the Lady Statesmen to claim both relays on the night. The group finished with a 3:38.65.

Core, a member of both relay victories also took second place in the 200-Individual Medley with a 2:17.13. Gonzalez took third for the Lady Statesmen with a 2:18.20.

Fallstrom had a second place finish in the 200-Backstroke, swimming a 2:14.52, over four seconds faster than her season best time.

Statesmen Bryce Anderson and Miles Duke took the top two spots in the men's 1000-Freestyle. Both swimmers set season best times in the event. Anderson took first place with a 9:55.21 and Duke finished right behind with a 9:59.44.

The duo took second and third in the 500-Freestyle. Anderson finished right behind Robert Fisher of the Reddies, touching the wall at 4:48.83. Duke took third with a 4:55.12. Both swims were personal bests on the season.

Matt Swaine picked up two big wins in diving for the Statesmen. Swaine won 1-meter diving with a final score of 273.55.The freshman won 3-meter diving with a 239.2.

Statesmen Conner Bennett took second in 3-meter diving with a 232.35 and finished third in 1-meter diving with a 208.95.

Cherlyn Wilhelm took second place in both the 1-meter (149.50) and 3-meter (129.30) diving events.

Vlad ZInca also took a victory in the meet, winning the 200-Butterfly in a sweep of the top three by the Statesmen. Zinca finished with a 1:57.17 to take first place. Michael DuBose finished second with a 1:58.32 and Iles finished out the top three with a 2:00.20. The swims by DuBose and Iles were personal best times on the season.

Clayton Boyd picked up a second place finish in the 200-Breaststroke, swimming a season best 2:13.54 in the event.

The Statesmen and Lady Statesmen will return to the pool Saturday across the road from Henderson State in Arkadelphia, Ark., swimming against the neighboring Ouachita Baptist Tigersharks. The meet is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start at Waggoner Pool.
