Swimming and Diving defeat OBU for a weekend sweep

ARKADELPHIA, Ark.
- The Delta State swimming and diving teams completed a big weekend sweep Saturday with victories over the Tigersharks of Ouachita Baptist. The Lady Statesmen set two pool records in a 129-97 victory and the Statesmen defeated the Tigersharks 132-103.

Maria Torres and Laura Nichols each broke records at Waggoner Pool with event victories.

Torres broke a record with a win in the 1000-Freestlye event, touching the wall at 10:34.13. Her time was seven seconds faster than her season best time, while also setting an NCAA "B" cut time with the victory.

Nichols took the other record with a victory in the 100-Breastroke, finishing with a 1:06.41. Her swim was .04 seconds faster than her career in-season best time as a Lady Statesmen and three seconds ahead of second place.
 
Torres also took second in the 500-Freestyle, falling just short in the narrowest winning margin of the day (.03). Nichols took second in the 50-Freestyle with a 25.30.
 
Karl-Richard Hennebach remained undefeated in the 100-Backstoke event this season, winning by .83 seconds with a time of 50.43. The freshman's time set a solid NCAA “B” cut time, as well as his fastest time in the event this season.
 
Hennebach was also a member of the 200-Freestyle relay team with Yvan Nys, Christian Barrett and Vlad Zinca that took first place with a 1:27.60.
 
Zinca also added a victory for the Statesmen in the 100-Butterfly, winning by over two seconds with a 51.52.
 
On the women's side of the 100-Butterfly, Stephanie Gonzalez and Danielle Dugas took the top two spots in the event. Gonzalez, a senior, edged out the freshman with a 1:00.46, while Dugas finished with a 1:00.68. Both times were season best times for the swimmers.
 
Dani Meerholz swam to a pair of victories in the meet. Meerholz took first in the 200-Freestyle with a 1:57.21, the sophomore's fastest time in the event this season. Meerholz also swam the final leg of the 200-Freestyle Relay that took first place. Kelsey Fallstrom, Torres, and Shawnee Gundry collaborated with Meerholz for a 1:41.23, winning by over a second.
 
Fallstrom added a second place finish in the 100-Backstroke with her fastest swim of the season, touching the wall at 1:01.08.
 
Bryce Anderson picked up a pair of victories in the pool, leading the Statesmen to top four sweeps of the 1000-Freestyle and the 500-Freestyle events. Anderson swam a season best 9:56.23 in the 1000-Freestyle and finished with a 4:50.30 in the 500-Freestyle.
 
Miles Duke (9:59.86, 4:50.66) and Rhett Guinot (10:12.60, 4:56.61) took second and third in the events, respectively. Ethan Barrow took fourth in the 1000-Freestle for the Statesmen sweep and Gabriel Cruz took fourth in the 500-Freestyle.
 
Hannah Core picked up her first win as a Lady Statesmen, winning the 200-Individual Medley in one of the tightest races of the day. All five swimmers finished within a 1.7 seconds of each other. Core touched the wall first with a 2:16.20, winning by .14 seconds. Core also took second place in the 100-Freestyle.
 
Yvan Nys picked up a win for the Statesmen in the 100-Freestyle. Nys (48.15) edged fellow Statesmen William Iles (48.55) in the race as both swimmers set personal season best times in the event.
 
Toby Tombers and Clayton Boyd also picked up victories for the Statesmen in the meet. Tombers took first in the 200-Individual Medley with a 1:59.59, winning by 2.2 seconds. Boyd led Barrett and Tombers in the 100-Breaststroke as the Statesmen swept the top three. Boyd took first with a 1:00.84. Barrett took second with a 1:01.53 and Tombers took third with a 1:02.15.
 
In diving, Matt Swaine finished the weekend 4-for-4 with victories in the 1-meter diving (267.25) and 3-meter diving (262.30). Conner Bennett and Emir Sonmez took second and third in both events for a top three sweep in both events.
 
Nicole Robinson took first in the 1-meter diving, winning with a 117.90. Cherlyn Wilhelm took second in 1-meter diving, but took first in 3-meter diving with a 135.80.

The victories Saturday gave the Green-and-White a 4-0 sweep over the pair of rivals from Arkadelphia this weekend. The sweep was the first for the Statesmen and Lady Statesmen combined in Arkadelphia since the Ronnie Mayers coaching era.

Delta State swimming will be off this coming Thanksgiving weekend, before heading to the Little Rock Invitational at the end of November for the final away meets of the season. Delta State will close out the fall semester with the Delta State Christmas Invitational December 14-16.
