CLEVELAND - The Delta State University Statesmen and Lady Statesmen will wrap up the fall semester this weekend with the annual Delta State University Christmas Invitational at the Delta State University Aquatics Center.
The Delta State University Statesmen and Lady Statesmen will swim against two other schools in the meet: Limestone University and Missouri S&T. Limestone will compete in the men's and women's events, while Missouri S&T will compete in the men's events.
The Statesmen and Lady Statesmen enter their first home meet of the season after competing in six road dual meets and an invitational to open the season. The Statesmen and Lady Statesmen come into the big meet of the fall semester on a two week break and are set to swim some of their top times this season.
Record Breakers
Maria Torres and
Laura Nichols each broke records at Waggoner Pool with event victories against Ouachita Baptist last month.
Torres broke a record with a win in the 1000-Free event, touching the wall at 10:34.13. Her time was seven seconds faster than her season best time, while also setting an NCAA “B” cut time with the victory.
Torres set an NCAA 'B' cut time with a 17:21.80 in the 1650-Free last time out, winning by 7.5 seconds. Torres also swam a season best time in the 500-Free with a 5:06.02. Later on in the event, Torres won the 400-IM with a 4:38.02.
Nichols took the other record with a victory in the 100-Breaststroke, finishing with a 1:06.41. Her swim was .04 seconds faster than her career in-season best time as a Lady Statesmen and three seconds ahead of second place.
Nichols took first in the 200-Breaststroke last time out, winning by nearly two seconds, touching the wall with a 2:26.92. Nichols also won the 100-Breaststroke, going 1.4 seconds faster than her season best time, touching the wall with a 1:05.01 for a victory of 2.7 seconds.
Hennebach undefeated in 100-Back
Karl-Richard Hennebach remains undefeated in the 100-Backstroke on the season after a dominant run in the event through the first couple months. For the fourth time in the event this season, Hennebach touched the wall first, winning by nearly a second with a time of 50.43 at Ouachita Baptist.
Hennebach took first in the 50-Free last meet. Hennebach finished with a 20.75, over a half second faster than his previous best time in the event this season. Hennebach's 48.92 in the 100-Butterfly last meet just missed an NCAA 'A' cut time.
Going stronger and longer
Bryce Anderson led the Statesmen to top four sweeps of the 1000 and 500-Freestyle events at OBU. Anderson swam a 9:56.23 in the 1000-Freestyle and a 4:50.30 in the 500-Freestyle Miles Duke (9:59.86, 4:50.66) took second in the events.
Anderson and Duke also took the top two spots in the men's 1000-Freestyle at HSU. Both swimmers set season best times in the event. Anderson took first place with a 9:55.21 and Duke finished right behind with a 9:59.44.
At the UALR Invite, it was Duke's turn. Duke took first in the 1650-Free with a 16:39.74. Anderson took third with a 16:45.62.
Dugas continues to drop times
Danielle Dugas took second in the 200-Fly at the UALR Invite. Dugas set her personal best and Lady Statesmen best time this season with a 2:08.94, nearly eight seconds faster than her time two weeks ago. Dugas also put in a strong swim in the 100-Fly, taking second with a 58.01. The time was over two seconds faster than the freshman's previous best this season.
New Discipline, top form
Yvan Nys swam in the 500-Free at the UALR Invitational and picked up the win. Nys won by .69 seconds and the sophomore touched the wall with a 4:44.48, four seconds faster than the best time by a Statesmen this season. More impressive, Nys swam in the event for the first time in the Green-and-White and only the third time competitively.
