Delta State Swimming and Diving wraps DSU Christmas Invitational with several strong performances

- The Statesmen and Lady Statesmen Swimming and Diving teams wrapped up the DSU Christmas Invitational Sunday night with several strong performances and a few more records.

Yvan Nys put together the biggest swim of the night in the 200-Backstroke final, winning the event in dominating fashion by nearly seven seconds with a 1:47.50. Nys' time came up .01 seconds shy of an NCAA A cut time in the event, giving him the top possible B cut time. The swim from the sophomore also broke the Delta State record in the event, which was previously held by Adam Dajka set back in 2010 with a 1:48.08.

Karl-Richard Hennebach also broke a Statesmen record in the finals. The freshman, who set an NCAA A cut time Saturday, nearly had another one in the 100-Freestyle with a first-place time of 44.83. With the win, Hennebach broke the previous Statesmen record of 45.35, set by Justin Ingvoldstad in 2009.

Earlier in the day, Dani Meerholz broke new ground in the mile swim, the 1650-Freestyle. The sophomore competed in the event for the first time as a Lady Statesmen and took first place with a 17:13.15 for a strong NCAA B cut time.

Maria Torres took second in the event, also setting an NCAA B cut time and Kelcie Winterrowd rounded out the top three.

Meerholz also took third place in the 100-Freestyle.

In the men's mile, Bryce Anderson took first place with a 16:20.02 and Ethan Barrow came in a close second with a 16:28.44. Both swimmers set personal bests in the 1650-Freestyle event.

Laura Nichols continued her dominant run at the three-day event, winning the 200-Breaaststroke over sister Heidi Nichols.The duo swam season best times in the event. Laura touched in at 2:24.61 and Heidi finished with a 2:25.16.

Danielle Dugas led the way for the Lady Statesmen in the 200-Butterfly. The freshmen picked up a big win with a 2:07.53, setting a NCAA B cut time and helping the Lady Statesmen to a top three sweep.

Stephanie Gonzalez and Hannah Williams completed the sweep for the Lady Statesmen in the event. Gonzalez touched in with a 2:11.83 and Williams finished with a 2:13.27. All three swimmers set season best times in the race.

In the men's 200-Butterfly, Michael DuBose pulled off a second half comeback with a strong charge to finish with a 1:51.44. DuBose set an NCAA B cut time with the swim, while also setting a season best time with the swim.

In the team competition, the Statesmen picked up the win, scoring 1112 points to Limestone's 674. Missouri S&T took third with 438.

The Lady Statesmen fell one point short, losing to Limestone 969-968.
