Delta State Swimming wraps national championships with strong, gutsy swims

MANSFIELD, Texas - The Delta State Swimming team wrapped up the 2012 NCAA Division II Swimming and Diving National Championships on Saturday with strong and gutsy performances from Vlad Zinca and Maria Torres Perez.

After taking 4th placeoverall in the 200-Butterfly Friday night, Zinca came around in the morning session and turned a lifetime best time in the100-Freestyle event. In the preliminary rounds, the freshman from Pitesti, Romania improved on his personal best time of 46.89 by over a quarter of a second, touching the wall with a 46.61.

With 66 entries in the event, Zinca's personal best came in an action backed set of heats, but was unableto qualify for the night session.

Torres swam in the mile (1650-Freestyle) swim on Saturday, after two days out of the pull while fiting an illness. The sophomore from Lima, Peru swam in her premier event despite not having training and still being sick. Torres gutted out a 17:49.64 in the event to close a very succesful season.

The Statesmen and Lady Statesmen each scored points at the national championships. The Statesmen took 20th place overall with 23 points from Vlad Zinca, the lone male swimmerto participate in the events this year for Delta State. The Lady Statesmen scored four points, finishing in a tie for 35th place overall. 67 teams swam in the events.
