Box Score
CLEVELAND, Miss. - The Lady Statesmen dropped a tough home contest, 2-1, to Shorter University in a matchup between Gulf South Conference schools.
The visiting Lady Hawks took the early lead when Kelli Davis got behind the DSU defense and was able to connect on the pass from Aline Tamiosso in the seventh minute, slipping the shot out of the reach of Megan Galloway.
After many minutes of tough battles on the turf of Delta Field, Shorter would get called for a penalty that resulted in a penalty kick for Rebecca Deegan. Deegan would not disappoint and drive home a goal, her second of the season, to tie the game. The score would remain tied as the half would end.
Delta State (3-8-1, 1-4-1 GSC) would pressure the Shorter defense, but it was the visitor that tallied the final goal of the game. Helena Farinha scored as the 68th minute was concluding.
Shorter (5-8, 2-4 GSC) would play the final twenty minutes in a defensive mode, double and triple teaming the ball and clearing many possessions. The visiting team was content to hold onto the narrow lead and not risk allowing the Lady Statesmen to draw even.
Delta State would outshoot the visitors, 15-12, but Shorter would have the 7-6 advantage in shots on goal. Lauren May would pace the Lady Statesmen with a pair of shots on goal, while Charlotte Benson and Tabitha Hayden would attempt three shots apiece. Galloway would turn away five shots from the Lady Hawks while playing the entire 90 minutes in goal.
The Lady Statesmen return to Delta Field on Sunday, October 20, as Lee University visits for a 1 PM start time. The Lady Flames are 7-3 on the season, with a 4-1 record in GSC competition.
