Statesmen Tennis Team Falls in Quarterfinal Round of GSC Tournament

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Delta State men's tennis team has been eliminated from the Gulf South Conference Tennis Tournament. The Statesmen (7-10, 3-6 GSC) were the No. 6 seed in the tournament as they faced off against the No. 3 seeded University of North Alabama (13-5, 8-2 GSC). The Lions were responsible for giving the Statesmen their first conference defeat earlier in the regular season, winning 6-3 on March 7th. The rematch was originally scheduled to be played yesterday, but was delayed due to rain. Clement Depreeuw and Lionel Gazzo were the only DSU team victorious in doubles competition. Depreeuw also picked up Delta State's lone singles win, as North Alabama was able to knock off the Green-and-White, 5-2, in the quarterfinal round to conclude the 2015 season.

Delta State was ranked No. 40 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association at the start of the season. The Statesmen began the year 2-2 in non-conference action before winning their GSC opener against rival school, Mississippi College. After dropping the aforementioned match against North Alabama and then winning the next against Lee University, DSU lost four straight matches, causing them to drop out of the ITA rankings. Delta State finished the season winning 3 of their last 5 matches, including losses to the University of Alabama in Huntsville on April 4th and Shorter University on Senior Day, April 11th.

Departing Delta State are graduate students Arthur Berthiaux and Clement Depreeuw. Berthiaux finished the season 7-7 in singles play and 7-9 in doubles. His two year playing career totaled 12 singles and 9 doubles victories. Depreeuw finished the season 8-2 in singles and 12-3 in doubles, becoming the team leader in wins. His career spans over four years, totaling to 30 wins in singles competition and 35 in doubles.
