CLEVELAND, Mississippi – The No. 7 Delta State University swimming and diving teams return to action on Saturday, Jan. 23 at the UWF Aquatic Center for an 11 a.m. tri-meet against No. 10 University of West Florida and No. 1/3 NCAA Division III member Emory
LAST TIME OUT: On Friday, Jan. 15, the Statesmen claimed first place in all but two events in a 212-77 victory over Henderson State.
The Lady Statesmen narrowly missed a clean sweep, as they claimed all but one race in a 185-113 win over West Florida and a 217-77 victory against Henderson State.
ABOUT THE STATESMEN: Mattia Schirru earned his second NSISC Men's Swimmer of the Week honor after winning each of his four events against Henderson State. Schirru won the 200-Freestyle (1:41.56), 50-Freestyle (20.76) and the 100-Freestyle (45.57). He also anchored the winning 400-Medley relay team that won in 3:24.32.
Matthew Swaine picked up his fourth NSISC Diver of the Week award after sweeping the diving competition against Henderson State. He won the 1-Meter with a score of 284.25, which is less than one point shy of the six-dive qualifying standard, and also won the 3-Meter with a NCAA qualifying score of 297.20.
Matteo Fraschi (100-Breaststroke, 200-Breaststroke),
Cody Lavoie (200-Backstroke, 200-IM) and
Nathan Sawicki (500-Freestyle, 1000-Freestyle) also picked up multiple individual victories in the win over HSU.
ABOUT THE LADY STATESMEN: Melanie Tombers earned her first NSISC Swimmer of the Week honor after posting three individual victories over UWF and HSU. She won the 1,000-Freestyle in 10:20.31, a time that was 16 seconds faster than second place. Tombers claimed the 200-Breaststroke (2:19.76) and won the 500-Freestyle in 5:05.55, which was 10 seconds faster than the runner-up finisher.
Anastasia Klyarovskaya also continued her winning ways, as she claimed all four races in which she competed (400-Medley relay, 100-Backstroke (55.35), 200-Backstroke (204.68), 400-Freestyle relay).
Chloe Bennett also claimed all four of her events, as she was the anchor leg in the 400-Medley relay and the 400-Freestyle relay. She also claimed victories in the 50 and 100-Freestyle.
ABOUT THE OPPONENTS: The Argonauts picked up 12 top-three finishes in the January 15 meet at DSU. The No. 1 Emory women's team has claimed the last six NCAA Division III Championships, while the men's team is currently ranked No. 3.
