Strong performances lead Statesmen to victory over OBU

CLEVELAND, Mississippi –The Statesmen started 2016 strong with a 169-87 victory over NSISC rival Ouachita Baptist University on Saturday, Jan. 9.

  • Short Story: The Statesmen started 2016 on a high note with a 169-87 win over OBU. Several 1-2-3 finishes and top performances led the Statesmen to dominate the meet.  

How it happened:
  • The Statesmen had a strong start to the meet with first and second place finishes in the 400-Medley Relay. The relay team of Cody Lavoie, Matteo Fraschi, Max Pendall and Mattia Schirru clinched first place with a time of 3:28.33. Adam Charlton, Alex Peach, Fabrice Wendel and Nick Zorn finished second.  
  • The Statesmen had a 1-2-3 finish in the 1000-Freestyle. Nathan Sawicki earned first place with a time of 9:52.15. Makis Jorgensen finished second, and Jacob Poole came in third.    
  • The Statesmen also earned a 1-2-3 finish in the 50-Breastroke. Fraschi clinched first place with a time of 26.27. Jorgensen came in second with a time of 29.71, and Colton Fremont came in third with a time of 30.00.
  • Lavoie earned first place in both the 200-Backstroke and 50-Backstroke.  
  • The Statesmen swept the 200-Butterfly event. Charlton, who has the 10th best time in school history for the 200-Butterfly, came in first place in 1:55.36. Bryce Anderson and Clayton Foster finished second and third respectively.
  • Schirru won both the 50-Freestyle in 21.23 and the 100-Freestyle in 46.65. He currently holds the 10th fastest time in Division II for the 50-Freestyle and the fastest time for the 100-Freestyle.
  • Fraschi swam the 200-Breastroke in 2:06.09 to clinch first overall. He also won the 200-Individual Medley.
  • Jorgensen won the 500-Freestyle in 4:46.02.
  • Pendall was the top swimmer in the 50-Butterfly, finishing first in 23.29. Keith Lloyd earned third with a time of 24.51.
  • The Statesmen concluded the meet with a first place win in the 400-Freestyle Relay.
 
A Look Ahead:
 
The Statesmen will return to the pool for a home meet against Henderson State University on Jan. 15.
