HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Remaining unbeaten this season in backstroke events, Giulio Brugnoni added to his Friday night victory in the 200-yard backstroke with a win Saturday in the 100-backstroke. The freshman, who currently holds the fastest time in Division II for the event, swam a 49.16 to outpace the rest of the field by over three seconds. He also led-off the Statesmen's victorious 200 medley relay to start the meet and was a member of their runner-up 200 free relay.
  • Senior Cody Lavoie joined Brugnoni on the 200-yard medley relay, swimming a strong breaststroke leg and helping Delta State to a winning time of 1:32.88. Lavoie added two runner-up performances in the 400 individual medley (4:06.46) and the 100 breaststroke (55.99).
  • All-American Mattia Schirru, the anchor leg on both Statesmen relays, captured the 100-yard freestyle in one of the meet's tighter races. The senior led at the 50-mark, turning in 21.81, then held on to beat Lindenwood's Zach Linder by .13 seconds with a time of 45.48.
  • Sophomore Kyle Weesner continued his dominance on the boards Saturday, picking up his second consecutive sweep of the 1-meter and 3-meter competitions. Weesner defeated Lions' runner-up Grant Williams by more than 20 points in the 1-meter event, totaling a score of 298.72; he followed with a winning score of 308.03 on 3-meter.
  • Nathan Sawicki (1000 free, 500 free), Gabriel Miranda (200 free, 500 free), Nic Martin (1-meter and 3-meter diving), Kohen Kerr (50 free), Eli McBride (3-meter diving), and Bill Ashwell (1-meter diving) all added individual top-five finishes for Delta State.
