CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Delta State men's and women's swimming and diving teams hit the road for the second consecutive weekend, traveling to Atlanta, Georgia, this Saturday to take on Georgia Tech.
With the recent release of the Division II top times list, Delta State finds itself with 14 of this season's top-ten marks.
The Georgia Tech dual meet will be Delta State's second Division I test of the season, after both the Statesmen and Lady Statesmen faced Alabama to start the year. Saturday's events are scheduled to start at 11 a.m. ET. A live stream of the competition will be available online through the ACC Network.
STATESMEN NOTABLES:
- In last week's Lindenwood Quad, the Statesmen picked up victories over Missouri S&T and William Jewell while losing to the host Lions by just two points.
- Giulio Brugnoni's undefeated season will be tested Saturday. The freshman has won every backstroke race so far this season, including the 100-yard backstroke in the season-opener against Alabama. Brugnoni's time at that meet, 48.71, ranks second in Division II. The Italian native is also fourth nationally in the 100 butterfly (49.49), 15th in the 200 back (1:53.79), and 9th in the 50 freestyle (20.99).
- Cody Lavoie accounts for three of Delta State's 14 top-ten times, cracking the rankings in the 100 breaststroke, along with the 200 and 400 individual medleys. Lavoie registered four season-best times during the Missouri road trip last weekend, including a 55.99 in the 100 breast for the fourth fastest time currently in Division II. The senior looks to be a key player in the Statesmen relays, as well.
- Two-time runner-up at last year's NCAA Championships, Mattia Schirru has continued to be a force in the sprint freestyle events for the Statesmen this season. Schirru claimed the 100 freestyle at the last three meets; his winning time of 45.48 at the Lindenwood Quad ranks sixth nationally. The junior has also swam the anchor leg on four of the Statesmen's relay teams which rank in the Division II top-ten.
- Juniors Nathan Sawicki (500 free; 1000 free), Gabriel Miranda (200 free; 500 free), and Adam Charlton (200 fly) are among Division II's top-20 in their respective events.
- Sweeping the diving events at the Lindenwood Quad, as well as earlier in the season against Rhodes College, Kyle Weesner has been one of the team's highest point scorers this season. The sophomore has already qualified for NCAAs in both the 1-meter and 3-meter events.
LADY STATESMEN NOTABLES:
- The women's squad posted similar results as the men last weekend, defeating the Cardinals but falling to their New South Intercollegiate Swim Conference rival, Lindenwood.
- Like Brugnoni, freshman Lucia Martelli remains perfect in backstroke events. Martelli came close to even splitting the 100 back against Lindenwood, flipping at 27.57 for the first 50 before coming home in 28.23. Her winning time of 55.80, which was more than three seconds ahead of the second-place finisher, is the fastest time in Division II this year. The Italian also holds the nation's top time in the 100 butterfly, with a 55.66.
- Already tabbed the NSISC Swimmer of the Week earlier this season, junior Celina Batsel snagged two individual event wins against the Lions in the 200 freestyle and 100 breaststroke. With her time of 1:53.12 in the 200, Batsel ranks fifth in Division II.
- All-American Carolina Jouisse will have her first opportunity of the season to swim the 1650 freestyle against the Yellow Jackets. The third-place finisher in the 500, 1000, and 1650 free at last year's NCAA Championships, Jouisse snagged two individual event wins against Rhodes and was third in the 500 last weekend.
- Coming off her first-ever collegiate victory in the 400 individual medley against Lindenwood, freshman Chelsea Borrowdale is ranked 16th in Division II with a time of 4:38.60; she is also 16th in the 200 breaststroke.
- On the boards, Hailey Leonard will look to build off her runner-up finishes in the 1-meter and 3-meter competitions last weekend. The senior captain and three-time school record holder has already qualified for her second NCAA Championships.
