SEARCY, Ark.-- Delta State University baseball (1-0) scored two runs in the top of the 11
th inning to defeat Harding University (0-1) to open a three-game series at Jerry Moore Field on Saturday.
Juwan Burney delivered an RBI single to break the tie game as part of the two-run 11
th.
LEADING OFF
- The game marked the season opener for both clubs.
- Delta State is 16-5 under Mike Kinnison in season openers and 52-24 all-time.
- The extra inning game was just the third season opener to go extra innings (1948, 1992).
- The doubleheader saw 10 Statesmen make their debut. Jason Popovich (CF), Emil Ellis (2B), Brian Lane (C ) Zack Shannon (1B), David Pimentel (DH), Clay Casey (RF), Tyler; Brown (LF), Jamell Newson (LF/PR), Justin Nussbaum (SS).
- The Green and White improved to 38-7 overall against Harding and 19-5 at Jerry Moore Field in Searcy, Ark.
- Delta State is 303-and 79 against Great American Conference member schools.
AT THE PLATE
- Delta State scored two in the first and one in the third to build a 3-0 lead. Lane's sac-fly and a Shannon double got the Statesmen on the board in the first. Tyler Brown belted a solo home run to left in the third.
- After Harding cut the deficit to 3-2 in the third, A Pimentel RBI single pushed the DSU lead to 4-2.
- The Bison took advantage of three-hit batters, a passed ball and a throwing error to score five runs in the fifth and take a 7-4 lead. Grant Guest and Miles Humphrey's delivered RBI singles in the inning.
- Delta State scored two in the seventh and one in the ninth to tie game and force extra innings. Brown doubled and Burney singled to start the seventh, scoring later on a pair of fielding errors. Popovich singled off the pitcher to score Newson and tie the game in the ninth.
- Harding loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth only to see Zach Osbon get a strikeout and a pop out to end the frame.
- Casey walked to start the 11th and moved to third after back-to-back balks. One out later, Burney singled to center field to plate Casey. A Popovich sac-fly later scored Burney to give the Statesmen a 9-7 lead.
- Bryant Johnston got a ground out and a fly out to close the game after entering with two runners on and one out.
- Burney went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and one RBI followed by Popovich, who went 3-for-5 with a runs scored and one RBI to lead the Statesmen at the plate
- Brown was 2-for-2 with a home run and three runs scored and Ellis was 2-for-5 with a run scored.
ON THE MOUND
- Osbon (1-0) went 2.1 innings with four walks and a strikeout while allowing just one hit to pick up the win.
- Bryant Johnston (1) worked two-thirds of an inning to record his first career save.
- The Statesmen used four pitchers in the game. Corey Beard started and went four innings with four strikeouts while allowing six runs on three hits. Brady Chambley worked four innings in relief, giving up one run on two hits with four strikeouts.
- Mason Faulkner (0-1) suffered the loss for Harding, allowing three runs on three hits with three strikeouts in three innings pitched.

Delta State and Harding University close out the three-game series with a doubleheader on Sunday at 12 p.m. Sunday doubleheader will be broadcast on 107.5 FM WCLD in Cleveland.
