CLEVELAND, Miss. - The Delta State University women's tennis team claimed a 5-4 victory over Shorter University after
Sara Alvarez-Rubio won in three sets on the last match in singles competition to secure the win for the Lady Statesmen on Saturday afternoon at the Cleveland Country Club Tennis Courts.
The Hawks jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the doubles competition after Cassandra Wennestrom and Aleksandra Durzynski defeated
Alex Howe and
Nathalia Sato, 8-3, but the Lady Statesmen bounced back to win out on the second and third courts. Delta State headed into the singles competition with a 2-1 lead over Shorter.
Shorter took back the lead after Durzynski defeated
Charlotte Le Flohic, 6-3, 6-0 and then Wennestrom defeated Sato, 6-4, 6-4 on court No. 1 to make it 3-2. The Lady Statesmen reclaimed the lead (4-3) after
Sarah Nash defeated Sadie Westberry, 6-0, 6-1, and
Alex Howe defeated Melinda Chrun, 6-2, 6-3. The Hawks tied it at 4-4 up on the sixth court, but
Sara Alvarez-Rubio sealed the victory for Delta State in the last match winning in three sets (4-6, 6-2, 6-2) over Julie Rinderknech to make the overall 5-4.
The Lady Statesmen wrap up their home stand and celebrate Senior Day against Lee University on Sunday, March 26 at 10 a.m.
