Tre Hobbs tossed complete games to help No. 3 Delta State University (37-11, 25-8 GSC) sweep a doubleheader from Mississippi College (20-25, 15-17 GSC) by the scores of 13-2 and 5-2 on Saturday at Frierson Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED (GM 1)
- The Statesmen scored three runs in the first and a run each in the second and third innings to build an early 5-0 lead. Emil Ellis belted a two-run home run and Zack Shannon hit a solo home run in the first. Josh Russell singled and scored on a Justin Nussbaum sac-fly in the second and Shannon mashed a solo home run in third.
- Casey Echols doubled and scored on a Chance Whitten single to cut the Statesmen lead to 5-1 in the bottom of the fourth. MC would leave runners at the corners to close the inning.
- The Statesmen answered in the top of the fifth on a Nick Morgan three-run home run with two outs to make the score 8-1.
- Hunter Wilson singled and later crossed the plate on a throwing to trim the deficit to 8-2 in the bottom of the fifth.
- The Statesmen scored four runs in the sixth and one in the seventh to take a 13-2 lead. Shannon singled home Emil Ellis, who walked, and Casey hit a three-run home run with Lane and Shannon aboard in the sixth. Popovich walked and scored on a wild pitch in the seventh.
ON THE MOUND (GM 1)
- Seth Birdsong (8-1) notched his fourth complete game, yielding two runs on eight hits with six strikeouts.
- MC starter Jake Fraze (3-5) allowed five runs on six hits with a strikeout to suffer the loss.
HOW IT HAPPENED (GM 2)
- The Green-and-White struck for five runs in the third to take a 5-0 lead. Nussbaum doubled and then scored on a Lane sac-fly. Shannon hit a three-run home run to score Ellis and Cody Young, and Casey followed suit with a solo home run.
- The Choctaws got on the board in the bottom of the fifth and added a run in the sixth to cut the DSU lead to 5-2. Kyle Smith had an RBI single in the fifth and Hunter Austin had a sac-fly to score a run in the sixth.
ON THE MOUND (GM 2)
- Tre Hobbs (6-4) gave up two runs, one earned, on six hits with six strikeouts over seven innings.
- Hunter Mullis (4-4) allowed five runs on seven hits with three strikeouts as the losing pitcher for MC.
NOTEABLES
- With the sweep, the Statesmen earn the right to host the Gulf South Conference tournament May 6-9 at Harvey Stadium - Ferriss Field.
- Shannon has tallied 77 RBIs on the year after his six RBIs in the doubleheader. The Cincinnati, Ohio, native is tied for fifth with Jud Thigpen (2003) and Craig Newton (2005) on the DSU single season RBI list.
- Casey and Shannon are tied with 16 home runs each, which is tied for fifth with AJ Downs (2000) on the DSU single season home run list.
- The Statesmen scored double digit runs for the 15th time and notched double figure hits for the 29th time with 13 runs on 11 hits in game one.
- The Statesmen hits a season-high five home runs in the game one win, eclipsing the four hit against Mississippi Valle State (4.18).
- Shannon went 3-for-4 with two home runs to extend his hitting streak to 11 games and has reached base streak to 41 games in game one.
- Casey finished 2-for-4 with a three-run home run Ellis was 2-for-4 with a home run, two RBIs and two runs scored in game one.
- Shannon and Casey extended consecutive games reached base streaks to 42 and 32 games, respectively.
- Casey went 2-for-3 with a home run and Popovich was 2-for-3 with a double in game two.
- Shannon had a three-run home run to extend his hitting streak to 12 games.
- Hobbs posted his fifth complete game of the season and his 13th of his career.
