CLEVELAND, Miss. – Josh Russell's RBI single in the bottom of the ninth helped No. 14 Delta State University (28-8, 18-5 GSC) earn a 6-5 win over Shorter University (18-17, 7-15 GSC) in extra innings in the nightcap of a doubleheader on Saturday at Harvey Stadium-Ferriss Field. The Statesmen used a five-run eighth to rally from a 4-0 deficit for a 5-4 win in game one.

HOW IT HAPPENED (GM 1)
- Shorter grabbed a 2-0 lead in the top of the second on RBI doubles by Raul Cortes and Bailey Gerstner.
- The Hawks added an unearned run to take a 3-0 lead in the top of the sixth. Nate Butterworth reached on an error and scored on when Raul Cortes reached on a fielder's choice.
- Jack Leech's RBI single in the top of the seventh gave the Hawks a 4-0 lead.
- The Statesmen rallied for five runs in the bottom of the eighth to take a 5-4 lead. Jason Popovich doubled and scored on a Brian Lane single while Lane later scored on a passed ball to cut the deficit to 4-2. Zack Shannon walked and Clay Casey was hit by a pitch and scored on a Dakota Glore pinch hit single to left to tie the game. Glore scored the go ahead run when Justin Nussbaum drew a walk with the bases loaded.
ON THE MOUND (GM 1)
- Brady Chambley (3-1) worked a scoreless eighth inning with a strikeout to earn the win in relief of starter Corey Beard.
- Zack Osborn (4) gave up hit with a strikeout in the ninth for the save.
- Beard pitched seven innings, allowing four runs on 10 hits while recording seven strikeouts.
- Shorter starter Jacob Ramos pitched 7.2 innings allowing four runs on five hits with seven strikeouts but did not figure in the decision.
- Jonathan Pintaro (3-3) took the loss giving up two runs on one hit for the Hawks.
HOW IT HAPPENED (GM 2)
- The Hawks took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second. A run came home on a Patrick Sanderson sac-fly and Butterworth had an RBI single.
- Popovich doubled to lead off the third and advanced to third on an Ellis fly out before scoring when Lane reached on an error.
- A Blaze Vazquez RBI single to right center pushed the Hawks' lead to 3-1 in the top of the fifth.
- Delta State got a run back to cut the deficit to 3-2 in the bottom of the fifth. Popovich had a leadoff single and scored when Zack Shannon reached on a fielder's choice.
- The Green-and-White tied the game 3-3 in the bottom of the sixth. Nick Morgan had a one-out single and would score on a Popovich sac-fly.
- Shorter scored two runs in the top of the seventh to take a 5-3 lead. Leech doubled home a run to make the score 4-3. Maddela delivered a RBI single with the bases loaded and appeared to have another run crossing when Clay Casey threw out Leech at the plate.
- Glore delivered his second clutch pinch-hit of the day with a two-run double to tie the game 5-5 in the bottom of the seventh.
- The Statesmen won the game with a run in the bottom of the ninth. Casey was hit by a pitch to start the inning before moving to third on a Glore sac bunt and a wild pitch. Josh Russell singled up the middle passed a drawn in infield for the game winning RBI.
ON THE MOUND (GM 2)
- Zach Osbon (6-1) got the Statesmen out of a first and third jam in the top of the ninth to earn the win.
- Peyton White tossed 2.1 scoreless innings with four strikeouts in relief of starter Tre Hobbs.
- Jason Gifford (2-2) was the pitcher of record for Shorter, allwing one run on two hits with a strikeout.
NOTEABLES
- Shannon's had a 16-game hitting streak snapped in game but drew a walk in both games two to extend his consecutive games reached base streak to 29.
- Jason Popovich had two hits in game one and three hits in game to post his 19th multi-hit game.
- Emil Ellis went 2-for-4 and Dakota Glore was 1-for-1 with the game tying two RBIs.
- Clay Casey was hit by a pitch in both games to extend his reached base streak to 11 games.
- The Statesmen pitching staff recorded nine strikeouts in game, marking the 18th time Statesmen hurlers recorded eight-plus punch outs in a game.
