Statesmen Split Doubleheader With Shorter

CLEVELAND, Miss. – Senior Jason Popovich went 3-for-4 with four RBIs to lead No. 1/2 Delta State (20-5, 11-2 GSC) to a 10-3 win over Shorter University (12-16, 4-10 GSC) in game one of a Gulf South Conference doubleheader on Saturday at Harvey Stadium-Ferriss Field.

Raul Cortes hit two of Shorter's four home runs to help the Hawks claim a 9-2 win in the nightcap. Banks Woodley (4-2) went the distance in game two, allowing two runs on five hits with five strikeouts to earn the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED (GM 1)
  • The Statesmen scored a run without the benefit of a hit in the bottom of the third inning. Tyler Brown reached on a fielder's choice and Justin Nussbaum and Nick Morgan drew walks to load the bases with two outs. Jason Popovich drew a walk to score Brown and give DSU a 1-0 lead.
  • Matt Christian singled and came home on a Luis Acevedo double to draw the Hawks even at 1-1.
  • Delta State plated three runs to break the tie and take a 4-1 lead in the fourth frame. Josh Russell singled and Justin Nussbaum doubled to set up a Popovich RBI triple. Popovich crossed the plate on an Emil Ellis single through the right side.
  • Zack Shannon led off the bottom of the fifth with a solo home run to stake the Statesmen to a 5-1 lead.
  • Acevedo singled to start the sixth and would come around to score on Victor Perez's single to center to cut the deficit to 5-2.
  • The Statesmen increased the lead to 9-2 in the bottom of the sixth. Morgan walked and scored Popovich double to right and Emil Ellis walked Popovich advanced to third on a wild pitch and would steal home on a double steal with Ellis. Ellis then trotted home off of Brian Lane's fifth home run of the season
  • Shorter cut the lead to 9-3 in the top of the seventh on a Raul Cortes solo home run to left.
ON THE MOUND (GM 1)
  • Statesmen starter Seth Birdsong (5-0) worked eight innings allowing three runs on 10 hits with six strikeouts to earn the win.
  • Victor Santana (2-3) gave up six runs on five hits with a strikeout and seven walks in the loss for the Hawks.
HOW IT HAPPENED (GM 2)
  • Shorter scored three runs in the first and second innings to take an early 6-0 lead. Cortes led off with a solo home run and Isaiah Maddela hit a three-run home run in the first. Nunez was hit by a pitch and scored on a Cortes single, and Cortes would score on an Acevedo home run to left center in the second inning. 
  • Clay Casey slugged his sixth home run of the season in the bottom of the second to cut the SU lead to 6-1.
  • Nunez singled and scored on an Acevado double in the fourth to give the Hawks a 7-1 advantage.
  • Casey's second solo home run of the game made the score 7-2 in the fifth.
  • Cortes hit a solo home run and Santos doubled and scored on an error as the Hawks answered Casey's homer and increased the lead to 9-2.
  
ON THE MOUND (GM 2)
  • Dalton Minton (4-1) lasted 1.1 innings, giving up six runs on five hits with a walk as the pitcher of record for the Statesmen.
  • Banks Woodley (4-2) went the distance in game two for the Hawks, allowing two runs on five hits with five strikeouts to earn the win.
 
NOTABLES
  • Shannon's solo home was his 38th career long ball and pushed him into fifth place all by himself on the DSU career home runs list. He is two shy of tying Craig Newton (2002-05) for third. Shannon's 19 home runs this season ranks fourth in a single season.
  • Popovich finished 3-for-4 with a double, a triple and four RBIs and Shannon was 2-for-3 with a home run and an RBI to lead DSU in game one.
  • Lane was 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs.
  • The Statesmen had 10 hits in game one, marking the 17th time the Statesmen have posted double-figure hits this season.
  • Casey was 2-for-3 with two solo home runs to lead the Statesmen in game two.
  • Cortes finished 3-for-4 with two home runs and three runs scored for the Hawks in game two.
  • The Statesmen improved to 16-1 when leading after six innings after the game one win.
  • The game one win gave head coach Mike Kinnison 917 career coaching wins (916-293-2).
