PREVIEW: Lady Statesmen Ready To Make Run At GSC Championships

GSC Championship - Live Results

CLEVELAND, Miss.
- After a successful regular reason that saw Delta State University claim a campaign-best 4th place finish at the All-State Sugar Bowl Festival (5K), the Lady Statesmen Cross Country team is ready to make a run at the Gulf South Conference Championship this Saturday, Oct. 26 at the University of Montevallo Cross Country Course. The race is scheduled to begin at 9 AM in Montevallo, Alabama. Live results and a complete race recap will be available at GoStatesmen.com.

"We're excited to be competing this weekend in the Gulf South Conference Championship at Montevallo," DSU head coach Doug Pinkerton said. "This year's championship field is deep and talented, but the Lady Statesmen have ran against some of the toughest competition in the country this year. I know they are prepared."

Freshmen standouts Clare Pinter and Hannah Pinter, twins from Pearl, Miss., have led the Lady Statesmen for much of the season.

"Clare has been out top finisher in each race this season while Hannah has come on strong in our last three races," Pinkerton said. "Both have had a great week of training and I expect them to have a great effort on Saturday."

While the Lady Statesmen are coming off a 13th place finish in their last race at Mississippi College on Oct. 12, all eight competitors had outstanding performances in the 6K event.

"I was very proud with our effort in the race at MC," Pinkerton added. " Sydney Roberts had one of her best runs of the year, as did Abby Thomas and Cayce Smith. I really believe we are starting to peak at the right time."

Conditions at Saturday's GSC Championship may not be ideal, as heavy rains and winds are forecasted for the central Alabama region.

"We're fortunate in that we've already competed on this course earlier in the year and our team knows what to expect," Pinkerton said. "With rain and windy conditions, familiarity with the course may be a plus for team."

Lee University is looking to repeat as league champion for a third consecutive year. The Lady Flames edged Alabama Huntsville for the 2018 title last year at Choctaw Trails in Clinton, Miss.
