MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The No. 10 Delta State University baseball team (9-0, 3-0 GSC) swept a doubleheader from the University of Montevallo (2-9, 0-3 GSC) by the scores of 11-1 and 8-4 on Sat., Feb. 16 at Kermit A. Johnson Field.
Hunter Riggins struck out 12 and allowed one run on six hits while
Jake Barlow went 3-for-5 with a grand slam in game one.
David Harrington went 3-for-4 with a triple and four RBIs while
Melvin Frazier struck out eight Falcons to lead the Green-and-White in game two.

HOW IT HAPPENED | GM 1
- The Statesmen scored two runs in the second and one in the third to build a 3-0 lead. Barlow singled and after advancing to second on a wild pitch, scored on a UM throwing error. Matt Majeur, who reached on the error, scored on a Josh Russell single to left.
- CJ Estave belted a home run to center field to make the score 3-0 in the third.
- A single by Herrington followed by walks to Darek Sargent and Estave loaded the bases in the fifth inning. Barlow belted a fastball over the left field wall for a grand slam and a 7-0 Statesmen lead.
- Tyler Krabbe hit a solo home run in the sixth to get the Falcons on the board trailing 7-1.
- Delta State added two in the seventh and two in the eighth to take an 11-1 lead. Hayden White had an RBI single and Russell had a sac-fly in the seventh. Majeur had an RBI double and White singled home the final run in the eighth.
- The Falcons started the eighth with back-to-back singles before Riggins struck out the next three Falcons to end the game by the NCAA run-rule.
ON THE MOUND | GM 1
- Riggins (3-0) struck out 12 batters while allowing one run on six hits in 8.0 innings pitched to earn the win.
- Starter Brady Schnarr (1-3) allowed three runs, two earned, on five hits with a strikeout as the pitcher of the record for the Falcons.
HOW IT HAPPENED | GM 2
- The Green-and-White took a 1-0 lead top of the first. Herrington singled to left field with one out and later came around on a throwing error after Sargent beat out an infield single.
- Delta State added to the lead with a run in the top of the fourth for a 2-0 advantage. Majeur and Russell walked to start the inning before a Herrington single to center brought home Majeur.
- Montevallo tied the game 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth on a Ben Teel two-RBI single.
- Statesmen scored five runs in the top of the sixth to break the tie and take a 7-2 lead. Russell and Payton Lane single and Brett Young was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Herrington tripled down the left field line to clear the bases before scoring on an Estave RBI ground out. Sargent walked and scored on a Barlow single.
- Montevallo answered with a two-run bottom of the sixth on a Khari Anderson two-run single to cut the DSU lead to 7-4.
- After UM trimmed the DSU lead to 7-4 in the eighth, Tommy Childree came in relief to record a strikeout to end the inning.
- Josh Russell reached on a throwing error and scored on a Young double to give the Statesmen an 8-4 lead going into the bottom of the seventh.
- Childree gave up a leadoff double in the seventh but coaxed a pair of ground outs and a strikeout to close the game.
ON THE MOUND | GM 2
- Statesmen starter Melvin Frazier (2-0) worked five innings, allowing two runs on three hits with eight strikeouts to the win.
- UM reliever Jesse Ellefson (0-1) gave up five runs on three hits and walked two to take the loss.
- Childree (4) picked up the save, tossing 1.1 innings with two strikeouts while allowing no runs on one hit.
NOTEABLES
- Barlow finished 3-for-5 with a double, a home run and four RBIs to lead the Statesmen in game one.
- White went 3-for-5 with two RBIs while White and Russell had two RBIs apiece.
- Estave's third- inning home run in game one was his first as a Statesmen.
- Herrington went 3-for-4 with a triple and four RBIs and Russell was 2-for-3 for DSU in game two.
- Estave, Barlow and Young also had RBIs in game two.
- Delta State has won the last 16 meetings in the UM series, improving to 36-8 all-time against the Falcons.
- The Statesmen start a season 9-0 for the first time since 2013.
