Minton, Frazier Toss Statesmen To Sweep Of Union

CLEVELAND, Miss. – Melvin Frazier tossed a complete game shutout with seven strikeouts to lead No. 10/7 Delta State University baseball (12-0, 6-0 GSC) to a 5-0 win over Union University (6-4, 0-1 GSC) in the nightcap of a doubleheader on Monday, Feb. 25 at Ferriss Field.
 
Dalton Minton worked 7.0 innings allowing a run on five hits with eight strikeouts while Weber Herbison and Matt Majeur combined for four RBIs to lead the Statesmen to an 8-1 win in game one.
 
David Herrington went 2-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI and Darek Sargent drove in a pair of runs in game two of the twin bill.

HOW IT HAPPENED | GM 1
  • Josh Frantz drew a two-out and scored on a Nolen Milton triple to give Union a 1-0 lead in the first.
  • Delta State plated a pair of unearned runs in the second to take a 2-1 lead. Majeur reached on a dropped fly ball with one out and Bradley Sanford reached on an infield single with two outs.  Herbison doubled down the right field line to scored Majeur and Sanford.
  • The Green-and-White added three runs in the seventh to make the score 5-0. Sanford was hit by a pitch and later scored on a fielding error and Herbison walked and scored on a Darek Sargent sac-fly. Brett Young reached on a fielder's choice and scored on a CJ Estave single.
  • Three runs crossed the plate in the seventh to extend the lead to 8-1. Majeur had an RBI double followed by a Sanford RBI single to plate the first two runs while Sargent singled and scored on a wild pitch.
  • Tyler Walton and Kris Peet pitched scoreless eighth and ninth innings to close the game for the Statesmen.

ON THE MOUND | GM 1
  • Minton (2-0) struck out eight batters and allowed one run on five hits with three walks over 7.0 innings to earn the win.
  • Brandon Maxwell (1-1) gave up five unearned runs on seven hits with a walk and hit batter to suffer the loss for Union.
HOW IT HAPPENED | GM 2
  • The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fifth when the Statesmen scored three runs to break the tie. Sargent, Estave and Barlow highlighted the inning with RBI singles.
  • Two insurance runs came across for the Statesmen in the sixth. Hayden White doubled and scored on a Herrington single and Herbison singled and scored on a Sargent sac-fly to right.
  • Frazier notched strikeouts number six and seven in the seventh to finish the game.
 
ON THE MOUND | GM 2
  • Melvin Frazier (3-0) tossed complete game a one-hit shutout with seven strikeouts against five walks in 7.0 innings pitched to get the win.
  • Ryan Mets (1-2) tossed four innings, giving up three runs on four hits with three strikeouts against five walks for UU.
 
 
NOTEABLES
  • The Statesmen notch two shutouts in a GSC series for first time since 2015 when DSU posted 10-0 and 7-0 wins over Union University (2.15-16.15) at Ferriss Field.
  • Delta State begin a season 12-0 for the first time since 1996 under Head Coach Bill Marchant and the first time ever under Head Coach Mike Kinnison.
  • The doubleheader sweep gave Kinnison 951 career wins at Delta State.
  • Barlow went 3-for-7 with three BSIs followed by Estave, who went 3-for-8 with two RBIs in the doubleheader.
  • Majeur had two hits, including a double and two RBIs and Herbison also had two hits with a double and two RBIs on the day.
