Diamond Statesmen Post Wins Over No. 13 SAU and HSU

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. –  The No. 10-ranked Delta State University baseball team (5-0) defeated No. 13 Southern Arkansas (2-2) and host Henderson State (1-2), 8-4, on Saturday, Feb. 9 at Clyde Berry Field on the Henderson State Campus.  
 
Hunter Riggins struck out over six scoreless innings while Brett Young, Jake Barlow and Payton Lane had RBIs in the win over the Muleriders.
 
Darek Sargent had 3 RBIs including a double and Melvin Frazier struck out a career 12 to highlight the win over HSU in the nightcap.

HOW IT HAPPENED | GAME 1 vs. SAU
  • The game was scoreless until the Statesmen took a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the third. Brett Young singled that scored Majeur and Weber Herbison and later scored on a wild pitch.  C.J. Estave walked and scored on a wild pitch.
  • Delta State added two runs in the fifth to build the advantage to 6-0. David Herrington singled and scored on a Payton Lane single and Jake Barlow doubled home Lane.
  • Southern Arkansas got on the board in the eighth. Josh Walker worked a leadoff walk and later scored on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to 6-1.
  • Dalton Minton worked the final three innings including a scoreless ninth to close out the Statesmen win.

ON THE MOUND | GAME 1 vs. SAU
  • Hunter Riggins (2-0) scattered three hits with five strikeouts against one walk over six scoreless innings to earn the win.
  • Minton (1) pitched the final three innings, allowing a run on one hit with three strikeouts to record the save.
  • Hunter Brantley (0-2) gave up six runs, five earned, on eight hits with five strikeouts and three walks as SAU's pitcher of record.
     
HOW IT HAPPENED | GAME 2 vs. HSU
  • The Reddies plated two runs in the bottom of the third to take a 2-0 lead. Danny Mitchell Jr., and after stealing second, scored on a passed ball while another run scored on an error.
  • Delta State tied the game 2-2 in the top of the fourth. Darek Sargent singled and scored on a Barlow triple and Barlow came home on a Hayden White single up the middle.
  • The score remained tied until the top of the eighth when the Statesmen scored three runs to take a 5-2 lead. Young led off with a bunt single and Herrington singled to put runners at first and second with no outs. Sargent doubled down the left field line to score Young and Herrington and scored on a wild pitch.
  • Henderson State cut the deficit to 5-4 in the bottom of the eighth. A run scored when Bryson Haskins reached on a fielder's choice while the second run scored on a throwing error on the play.
  • The Green-and-White added three runs in the top of the ninth to push the lead to 8-4. Herbison, Young and Herrington drew walks to load the bases with no outs. Sargent walked to score Herbison and Barlow's sac-fly scored Young. Majeur drew the second bases-loaded walk in the inning to score Sargent.
  • Tommy Childree came on and recorded a strikeout to end the threat in the eighth and then tossed a scoreless ninth to close the game.

ON THE MOUND | GAME 2 vs. HSU
  • Statesmen starter Melvin Frazier struck out 12 Reddies while allowing up two runs on three hits with four walks.
  • Henderson State starter Matthew Baker gave up two runs on four hits with nine strikeouts.
  • Christian Day worked 2.1 innings in relief, giving up two runs, one earned, on no hits with two strikeouts and four walks to earn the win.
  • Tommy Childree (2) pitched the Statesmen out of a bases-loaded situation in the eighth and tossed a scoreless ninth to end the game.  The junior recorded three strikeouts and did not allow a hit in 1.2 innings worked.

NOTEABLES
  • Payton Lane went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Young and Barlow had an RBI apiece against SAU.
  • Riggins has worked 11.2 scoreless innings with 15 strikeouts against one walk while scattering four hits in two starts to open 2019.
  • Frazier struck out a career-high 12 batters eclipsing his old mark of four set in a relief outing against Nova Southeastern (2.3.18).
  • Childree is two-for-two in save opportunities in the young season.
  • Sargent went 2-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and three RBIs and Herrington was 2-for-4 with two runs scored against the Reddies.
  • Barlow had two RBIs including his first career triple in the fourth against HSU.
