ROME, Ga. – Jake Barlow drove in five runs to lead the No. 10/1 Delta State University baseball (14-1, 7-0 GSC) to a 13-3 win over Shorter University (7-7, 2-5 GSC) in game one of a doubleheader on Saturday at Ledbetter Baseball Complex.
Ivan Nunez singled and scored on a fielder's choice in the bottom of the eighth to give the Hawks a win in extra innings win in the nightcap.

HOW IT HAPPENED | GM 1
- Shorter grabbed a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second. Matt Christian had an RBI triple to right and Bailey Gerstner followed with an RBI to left center.
- Luis Acevedo's leadoff solo home run extended the Shorter lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the sixth.
- Delta State scored three runs to tie the game 3-3 in the seventh. Jake Barlow belted a two-run home run and Josh Russell doubled in the tying run.
- The Statesmen broke the tie with a seven-run seventh to take a 12-3 lead. Barlow drew a bases loaded walk and had a two-run single and Josh Russell drove in two runs with a double. Matt Majeur was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and had an RBI single while Payton Lane and Weber Herbison had RBIs in the inning.
- Kris Peet pitched a scoreless bottom of the eighth to close the game due to the NCAA 10-run rule.
ON THE MOUND HAPPENED | GM 1
- Hunter Riggins (5-0) gave up three runs on seven hits with three strikeouts and two walks to earn the win for the Statesmen.
- Shorter starter Victor Santana carried no hitter and a 3-0 lead into the seventh inning before allowing three runs on five hits with three strikeouts.
- Jonathan Pintaro (2-1) was touched up for 10 runs on seven hits with a strikeout to suffer the loss for the Hawks.
HOW IT HAPPENED | GM 2
- The Statesmen grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Majeur singled and later scored on a Bradley Sanford sac fly to right.
- Shorter loaded the bases in the bottom of the second with no outs and only managed to score one run. Matt Christian was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Sargent made a diving snag of a line drive to end the SU threat.
- Shorter put runners in scoring position following a Nate Butterworth double. Melvin Frazier struck out the next two Hawks to keep the game tied 1-1.
- The Hawks put two runners on base with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. Tommy Childree came on in relief of Frazier to get a pop out force extra innings.
- Shorter scored a run in the eighth to win the game 2-1. Michael Avendano singled and advanced to third on a Victor Perez single to start the inning. Pinch runner Victor Nunez stole second to put runners at second and third with one out. Acevedo grounded to first but and Nunez beat the throw home to give SU the win.
ON THE MOUND HAPPENED | GM 2
- Statesmen starter Melvin Frazier pitched 6.2 innings allowing one run on 3 hits with nine strikeouts but did not figure in the decision.
- Banks Woodley (1-2) went eight innings allowing one run on three hits with eight strikeouts as the winning pitcher for Shorter.
- Tommy Childree (0-1) gave up one run on three hits 0.2 innings in relief.
NOTEABLES
- Barlow finished game one 3-for-4 with five RBIs and his team-leading fourth home run this season.
- Majeur went 1-for-2 with two RBIs and Sargent was 2-for-5 with two RBIs in game one.
- Herrington had two hits and Majeur had a hit o lead the Statesmen in game two.
