Sargent Leads Statesmen Past SAU, 10-1

CLEVELAND, Miss. Darek Sargent went 2-for-3 with a home run and four RBIs to lead the No. 12/14 Delta State University baseball team (21-7, 12-5 GSC) to a 10-1 win over No. 15/19 the Southern Arkansas University (19-9, 14-4 GAC) on Wednesday at Harvey Stadium-Ferriss Field.
 
Sargent finished 2-for-3 with a triple, a home run, two runs scored and four RBIs while Matt Majeur went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs.
 
Majeur's three-run home run in the fourth broke a 1-1 tie and gave the Statesmen a 4-1 lead while Majeur belted a two-run home run in the fifth to extend the lead to 6-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Statesmen took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. David Herrington reached on an error and scored on a Patrick Hodges sac-fly to left field.
  • SAU's Cooper King led off with a double and scored on a Devin Beard sac-fly to tie the game 1-1 in the third inning.
  • The Green-and-White broke the tie with a three-run fourth to take a 4-1 lead. Patrick Hodges was hit by a pitch and Hayden White single with one out to set up Sargent's third home run of the season.
  • Southern Arkansas loaded the bases with two outs in the fifth before reliever Christian Day got Austin Baker to fly out to end the threat.
  • Majeur's three-run home run in the bottom of the fifth extended the Statesmen lead to 6-1.
  • The lead increased to 7-1 in the sixth. Hayden White doubles to left field and scored on a Sargent sac-fly.
  • The Statesmen added a run in the seventh and two in the eighth for a 10-1 lead. White doubled and scored on a Sargent sac-fly in the seventh. Sargent tripled and scored on a wild pitch and CJ Estave was hit by a pitch and scored on a Bradly Sanford single in the eighth.
ON THE MOUND
  • DSU starter Seth Hougesen (4-0) gave up one run on one hit with a one strikeout in 4.1 scheduled innings pitched to pick up the win.
  • Austin Stubber (1-2) tossed one inning, allowing three runs on two hits with a strikeout to suffer the loss for SAU.
NOTEABLES
  • Christian Day, Tyler Walton, Layne Tedder, Bailey Hargrave, Tyler Walton and Tommy Childree combined to scatter three hits with five strikeouts over the final 4.2 scoreless innings out of the bullpen.
  • Sargent went 2-for-3 with a triple, a home run, two runs scored and four RBIs.
  • Matt Majeur was 2-for-4 with a home run, one run scored and two RBIs.
